Cornwall Living 2017

A very Cornish affair

Cornwall’s stunning coastline and shimmering seas make the perfect wedding backdrop.

Despite the weather, or maybe… because of the weather… Cornwall is the perfect backdrop for your wedding, and it is getting increasingly popular as a wedding destination. Stunning coastline, beautiful beaches and gorgeous countryside makes for the best setting for your wedding. From the rugged north coast to the tranquil bays on the south, with all the fabulous countryside in between; iconic engine houses, castles, magnificent country houses, stylish hotels and bijou restaurants; lighthouses and pretty harbour towns; whatever the backdrop you want for your wedding Cornwall has it by the bucketful!

Now is the perfect time to plan your wedding and start to build a folder full of fabulous ideas. From venues to photographers; the food to serve your guests and what to drink with it: to the perfect dress, we really do have it all. It’s well worth spending some time sitting on a beach together or walking along the coast just thinking, and talking, about exactly what sort of wedding you both want, what sort of feel you want it to have, the memories you want to create, and, of course the practicalities of how much you want to spend and how many guests to invite… and then try to stick to it!

You might prefer an informal, small, and intimate wedding, where everyone feels welcome and comfortable – with lots of laughter and great music. Or perhaps you want the full traditional white wedding, with a church service and a bit of pomp and ceremony with everyone getting the chance to dress up to the nines with a great party in the evening!

I was recently at a fabulous wedding event at Tregothnan Estate to get some ideas. There was plenty to think about from the wonderful flowers grown on the Estate (it’s home to the largest private botanical garden in the UK as well as British tea!), to gorgeous vintage materials and china used to decorate the tables, plus, of course, yet more beautiful Tregothnan flowers. The dress, hair, make-up, cake and photographer are all things to be considered and researched. With Cornwall now such a popular wedding destination, there is plenty of everything you need for your perfect wedding available locally. But what stood out at Tregothnan was the weather… it poured… indeed there were severe weather warnings! But it was still fabulous. The bride wore white wellies, apparently quite a common feature of wedding attire these days! We all hope for brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies, but don’t always get what we wish for. And yet with a few extra contingencies (a supply of large umbrellas maybe?) a wet and/or stormy wedding can be even more memorable… it’s just how you deal with it!

So start planning you summer or winter wedding for this year or next right now and just remember that however good you are you just might not get the weather you dream of… but it’s still your day and one you, and your guests, will remember forever – white wellies and all!
