Dr Jane Gibbins honoured with prize from The Royal Society of Medicine

Cornwall Hospice Care consultant Dr Jane Gibbins has been awarded the Palliative Medicine Masters Prize from The Royal Society of Medicine. She carried out a novel piece of research about care of the dying, which challenged the cultures and perceptions surrounding previous research on this phase of life. The aim was to improve care of the dying by facilitating individualised care and symptom control for patients. Jane elaborates: “As part of the study we developed some simple, yet comprehensive prompts for staff to use in hospital wards, alongside prescribing guidance and a symptom observation chart. We didn’t know if it would work, but it did. The symptom observation chart improves care for patients by changing the standard focus of measuring blood pressures and temperatures, to concentrating on key problems for the dying, like pain, nausea and breathlessness.”

Jane says the award is an honour and recognises research; “we’re exploring novel areas of development within Cornwall Hospice Care, such as the use of outcome measures, and at the Joint Palliative Care and Oncology Clinics we’re involved in at Treliske Hospital. I’m pleased that we are empowering other healthcare professionals to provide the best quality of care for all patients reaching the end of their lives.”
