100 reasons to visit Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery

Art should be enjoyed by everybody, and thanks to the innovative Own Art scheme, it can be! The scheme, funded by Arts Council England, encourages ownership of original art, making it more accessible to all, by enabling the coast to be spread into ten monthly instalments, with no extra costs to the customer and no deposit to pay
(www.ownart.org.uk).

One gallery that has wholehearted signed up to the scheme is Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery, which has just reached the amazing milestone of 100 applications! Louise from gallery says “We’re really proud to part of the scheme and are delighted to be helping people get original artwork into their homes!” Applications can be processed via email if buying from the gallery’s website, or in just 10 to 15 minutes in the gallery. What’s more, you can take your art home with you that day. So if you thought that beautiful piece you’ve pined after was out of your reach, it’s time to think again!

Lucky lottery leads Liana to London

Liana Clough from Truro has just had the surprise of her life, winning £4,000 on the Cornwall Hospice Care Lottery. The rollover prize – which at its maximum can reach up to a staggering £10,000 – was handed to her during a surprise presentation at the charity’s Truro department store.

On Friday 23rd June, Liana’s number came up. It turns out she’s been an avid computer game player for 11 years and has recently been saving to attend a gaming convention in London this September. A tearful Liana tells us: “That’s just amazing. It’s wonderful, wonderful timing. Thank you so much to everyone involved!”

Sarah Vincent, Lottery Manager for the Cornish charity, says: “It was lovely to hear of Liana’s plans and to know this win has made a difference to her. All this celebration for just a £1 line!”

Marine Conservation Society joins forces with Waitrose

Aimed at creating the biggest beach and river clean event series ever, this new partnership will help mobilise the public in the fight against the rising tide of plastic litter on our beaches.

Tor Harris, Head of Responsible Sourcing and Sustainability at Waitrose, tells us: “The marine environment is important to all of us, so the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) cleans were an obvious choice when thinking where to donate some of our plastic carrier bag funds.
It’s our first step in donating £1 million to projects to tackle plastic pollution.”

MCS Beachwatch Manager, Lauren Eyles, says: “Our beaches are suffering, but we can all do something positive to help – find your nearest event and get stuck in!”

Get the coastal Scandi look!

Owner of chic homewares boutique Coastal Scandi, Isabel Humphreys, gives us her advice on achieving a cool interior this summer. “Inspired by our love of the coast, nature and the outdoors, we share an affiliation with our Nordic friends,” says Isabel. “Scandinavian homes have a pure, pared back style that centres around clean lines, simplicity, flawless craftsmanship and understated elegance.”

So how to create the look? Isabel starts from the floor upwards. “Carpet never took off in Scandinavia and most interiors will have wooden, preferably light, flooring in all rooms. Think white walls, floors and ceilings, with cool grey and subtle blues. Add a contrast colour such as yellow, blue or black to add that contemporary feel.” Finally, as Isabel explains, you should declutter.
“Simplify your space with functional, useful pieces. Choose furniture that is simple and elegant with clean lines – less is more! We love the elegance of Tom Raffield’s Arbor Chair in oak and grey wool, teamed with the fun quirky Shorebirds print, and bright injection of a yellow lambs wool throw.”

All items are available to buy at Coastal Scandi in Wadebridge, so pop in to see how you can create the look in your own home.

Spark ignites ambition of new business Guanchitas

A recipe handed down for generations has been the inspiration for Guanchitas, a new business launched in Falmouth. Guanchitas is the female version of a Guanche, which translates as
‘cave people’.

The recipe for the authentic, traditional chilli sauce came from business owner Jennie Merilion’s grandmother who lived in a cave in the Canary Islands. Jennie has perfected the sauce, and signed up to the Spark programme to launch her business, a fully funded project by the European Regional Development Fund. If you have a great business idea, or you have registered in the last 12 months, why not contact Spark to start your journey.

Dream doors

Matt Jones from Dream Doors is “immensely proud” of what the company has achieved so far!

Having now been trading for a whole year, Dream Doors provides friendly, local and personalised service, with a focus on providing you with top quality products and attention to detail.

Matt tells us: “The thing that sets us apart is that our doors are made to measure, so you can get new doors to fit your existing units and inject a new lease of life into your current kitchen.”

In financially uncertain times, we all need to tighten our pockets and make sure we get value for money, so why rip out perfectly good units when you could simply replace the doors and drawers? It’s not just your pockets that will feel the benefits, but the environment too, with any waste wood that Dream Doors removes being used to create new, manmade boards!
