Light up a life

This December sees the return of Cornwall Hospice Care’s annual ‘Light up a life’ events across Cornwall, which give people the chance to remember their loved ones at Christmas.

Christmas is often a busy and exciting time of year but for some it can also be a sad time as they remember loved ones who are no longer here. ‘Light up a Life’ enables people to do just that by entering their names in the special books of remembrance and, if they wish, to attend one of the celebration services.

This year two brand new services, at Wadebridge and Newquay, have been added to make seven in total across the county. Truro Cathedral will host the first event. This popular, traditional Christmas service features performances from a local school as well as readings, prayers and carols. A large screen shows a live feed of the tree on High Cross in darkness and at the end the lights are switched on to symbolise the lives of those being remembered. After the service there is a chance to view the books of remembrance and enjoy some festive refreshments. The service in Truro is then followed by services in St Austell, a new event in Wadebridge, Penzance and Hayle. The final event will take place at the Bowgie Inn, Newquay, and is unique to all the others in the series, as it will follow a non-religious format. The evening will feature live music and readings with festive refreshments and a chance to view the Newquay Book of Remembrance.
