Interior design tips: Camellia & Co’s Elaine Skinner gives us five reasons why Roman blinds are the most versatile of all window dressings.
Firstly, Elaine explains: “The soft pleats of Roman Blinds give a more decorative look when folded, but hang flat when lowered, showing off your fabric choice beautifully.”
They can also either be simple and minimal in design, or decorative and elaborate, depending on your choice of pattern, fabric and colour. “They work equally well for romantic, traditional and contemporary interiors, and can feel either relaxed or formal.”
Flat fold or classic style Roman blinds can be fitted in the recess to pair with curtains, but are just as useful if you don’t have enough space either side of a window for drapes. If you want to block out the light, Elaine tells us, hang them on the wall surrounding the recess.
What’s more they can be made from most types of fabric, but Elaine is keen to emphasise the importance of avoiding heavy or rigid materials, as the blind won’t stack neatly. They can also be lined in thermal or blackout fabric, which makes them ideal for draughty cottages or children’s rooms. “They can even be motorised for ease, adding a touch of ‘James Bond’ glamour!” finishes Elaine.
Camellia & Co offer a bespoke blind making service, taking the hassle out of measuring up and serving up a fantastic choice of fabrics to choose from.

Introduce some Scandi Christmas style to your home
With cold and dark winters, the Swedes love to celebrate Christmas by lighting up their homes with candles in every room and advent candlesticks in their windows, along with traditional paper advent stars representing the Star of Bethlehem.
The main features of a traditional Scandinavian Christmas look include handmade decorations, natural woods, fir tree wreaths, pine cones, red berries, hearts, white stars and snowflakes – and, of course, reindeer! Coastal Scandi’s Isabel tells us: “Don’t forget the Scandi style rule – less is more. By sticking to a red and white theme, this is easily achieved!”
Once you have all this in place, all that’s left to do is snuggle up with a warm, cosy blanket, a hot cup of ‘glögg’ (mulled wine), saffron buns and gingerbread cookies. Delicious!

Three top tips to get your interior project off the ground
The Cotton Mills team tells us that there are three things to consider when getting your scheme off the ground. Firstly, what style would you like to create and will this fit in with the existing furniture, art work and character of your property? Houzz and Pinterest are great tools for finding inspiration.
Secondly, what are your home’s surroundings? Are they coastal, country, city, woodland? The materials you use and colour scheme you adopt will likely reflect or contrast this.
Finally, what’s your style? It can be useful to come up with a title for your chosen
scheme, whether it’s a well-established Scandinavian scheme, Art Deco or Coastal, or one that’s as unique as you. Referring back to this throughout the process will ensure the finished product lives up to your expectations.

Fowey’s beacon of light
Tucked away beside Fowey’s church in Cornwall is the town’s oldest shop, at 9 South Street, dating back to the 13th century. Pilgrims were once fed and watered there; today it is home to Any Old Lights and its Aladdin’s cave of vintage lighting, ships’ wheels, bells and compasses.
The family-run business sells vintage and new nautical and industrial lighting, as well as maritime collectibles, sourced from around the globe. The team also save old lights from extinction, carefully copying fittings in aluminium, brass and copper that are on the verge of becoming obsolete, as part of their Exclusives range.
If you can’t visit the delightful seaside town of Fowey in person, you can also find Any Old Lights online. The company ships worldwide to both domestic and commercial customers.
