Porthtowan based fashion designer Katy Nicholson and her eye-catching brand, Wildcard Silks, shone at the 2018 Brit Awards on Wednesday 21st February. The Cornish company who create luxury silk scarves and accessories for women and men were talent spotted and selected by Universal Music to be presented as a special gift to each of the award winners on the night of the ceremony.
Katy, age 30, who also works as a horticulturalist at Glendurgan Gardens, started Wildcard Silks in October 2016 as she wanted an outlet for her drawings, a passion of hers during her spare time. Initially she created a few designs for scarves from her artwork which then led to a demand for ties and bowties, so the Wildcard brand was officially launched.
With eclectic and quirky themes ranging from sugar skulls to roller skates, rhododendrons to tigers, this is a fun-loving collection of luxury silk scarves, neck ties and accessories with the design for each piece born from an original artwork hand drawn by Katy. Each of the Brits Award winners including Dua Lipa, Stormzy, The Foo Fighters, Rag n Bone man, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and The Gorillaz were given one of Wildcard’s signature sugar skull designs, inspired by Katy’s road trip along Route 66.
“Being approached by The Brit Awards is a real honour for any brand but as a new and up and coming label, it is very exciting to be offered this opportunity and global exposure. I have big ambitions for Wildcard so really look forward to seeing where this unique boost for the business will take us” commented Katy Nicholson, creator of Wildcard Silks. “The whole idea behind the brand is to create something playful, a splash of colour, a piece of something crazy, a statement defining who you are as a person and it is wonderful to have a treasured high quality piece you can call on in your wardrobe”.
