Cornwall Living 2017

A bespoke solution

We catch up with Odile Kipling, artisan cabinet maker and owner of So Kipling.

It’s one we often hear: “I came to Cornwall just for a weekend and ended up staying!” In this case, it’s the story of bespoke cabinetmaker Odile Kipling, hailing originally from France. “I grew up in a very old chalet in the Alps and spent most of my childhood helping my dad renovate it”, explains Odile. “That’s where my love of working with wood and turning empty spaces into beautiful and practical ones came from.” Odile turned her hobby into a career, and has now been in the furniture business 18 years, having set up her own business, So Kipling, nearly 14 years ago. “I’ve never looked back and have enjoyed every bit of it!” she beams.

Odile specialises in unique, high-quality wooden furniture, including both free standing and fully-fitted kitchens, bedrooms, studies and bathrooms. Odile designs and hand-produces all the pieces in solid wood at her workshop, to the client’s specifications, crafting the details that make the difference between a piece of furniture and a work of art. “When clients come to So Kipling, they see me, from the very beginning to the very end of the project. No information is lost and I can advise on every detail at every stage. Because I make the furniture I know exactly what can or can’t be done.”

Making everything from scratch means that Odile can overcome obstacles, such as hiding unsightly boilers, while making them easily accessible, and creating innovative storage solutions in limited or unusual spaces. For example, a client wanted an island unit in a small kitchen for occasional use. Odile created an island unit that can be tucked away and used as a standard cupboard, with a pull-out worktop and chopping board and wheeled out, when needed. “The client is delighted”, says Odile, “she got everything she wanted and much more!”

Odile continues: “Freehand carving ensures a piece is unique, giving a truly personal touch. A deep carving with lots of details will make a statement whereas a shallow one even if large will be subtle and not distract from the beauty of the rest of the room.” So if you’d like to make an impact in your home, or have a challenge that requires a bespoke solution, speak to Odile now!
