Walk this way

Discover the many benefits of Nordic Walking with Made for Life Foundation and Walk Kernow.

Let’s start by telling you where Nordic Walking began. The Finnish Cross Country Skiers needed something to keep them fit in the summer months when there was no snow on the ground so, using shorter poles, they began Nordic Walking to keep up their full body fitness in preparation for the winter. Today Nordic Walking has grown into a fantastic, popular sport, suitable for all ages and abilities, beneficial to those with a disability and can be used for rehabilitation too.

Kelly Bennett, who owns a friendly Nordic Walking business called Walk Kernow, has teamed up with Made for Life to create fantastic and rejuvenating walking workshops. “I came from the sofa”, laughs Kelly. “Yes, I was lazy once upon a time! But I’m now a fully-qualified INWA Nordic Walking Instructor and not so lazy!”

Recently, Kelly met with Juliette from Made for Life over a coffee to talk about how Nordic Walking can benefit people who have or have had cancer. “It was great to talk about how I have seen Nordic Walking benefit my clients who have or have had cancer, from lifting the mood by exercising in nature, improving lymph system function to improving the posture and core strength and helping balance and coordination which in turn benefits those with peripheral neuropathy. To top it off it doesn’t feel any harder than walking but you are burning up to 46% more calories and using up to 90% of the skeletal muscles. The more we talked the more we realised that working together we could provide something great for people with cancer.”

Together, Made for Life and Walk Kernow have planned workshops tailored to suit your needs at the beautiful Trelissick Gardens and there’s even time for coffee, cake and a bit of socialising after! So for a couple of hours of fun and giggles, why not have a go? There’s free parking and pole hire included. “If I can do it so can you,” says Kelly, “and as they say… if you can walk you can Nordic Walk. Oh, and boys… it’s for you too!”
