Journey into the past and the heart of beautiful Cornwall aboard the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.
Steam billowing through the air, the characteristic sound of the whistle, the feel of wind rushing past the carriage as the beautiful countryside rolls by. There’s really nothing quite like it! While there are many fantastic ways to experience the wonders of Cornwall, from the water, or atop the cliffs, you haven’t done it properly until you’ve taken a ride on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.
The Bodmin and Wenford Railway is Cornwall’s only standard gauge (full size) steam railway, and makes a fantastic family day out. Situated in the heart of Cornwall, with easy access to the A30 and A38, and with a main line connection at Bodmin Parkway, it offers a leisurely 13-mile round trip through the idyllic Cornish countryside.
You’ll be taking a step back in time too. Bodmin General station is the railway’s headquarters, and it has been carefully restored to 1950s/60s condition. From here the lines drop down to Boscarne Junction in the stunning Camel valley, and Bodmin Parkway in the Fowey valley.
The return journeys are on the steepest gradients of any preserved railway in Britain. The sight and sound of a heritage steam locomotive hard at work with a fully loaded train is a unique experience in itself.
The Railway has accumulated a splendid collection of operational steam and diesel locomotives, representing Great Western Railway, Southern Railway, and British Railways types, many with a Cornish pedigree. Some of these incredible engines date back to the Victorian era. Together with some classic rolling stock, it’s almost a national railway museum for Cornwall!
Scheduled passenger trains run for 220 days of the year. But there are also special seasonal events throughout the year too, such as the Heritage Transport Festival, the Victorian Weekend, the Spring and Autumn Steam Galas, and the incomparable Santa Specials. Steam and cream tea trains, first class dining trains, and Murder Mystery trains are also part of the eclectic programme.
The railway promises something for everyone; whether local to the area or discovering Cornwall for the first time, families or enthusiasts, you can guarantee a day to remember.
