Cornwall Living 2017

Shining Bright

We catch up with Paul and Clair Pennington whose business is fast becoming a jewel in Porthleven’s crown.

Jewellers Paul and Clair Pennington crossed Porthleven harbour from the Breageside to open their new jewellery shop earlier this year. From beginning on a stall on the Harbour Markets selling Clair’s distinctive earrings and necklaces as a hobby, they took the plunge and went into business.

Their tiny workshop on the right hand side of the harbour was so successful that Clair gave up her full-time job and Paul began to train as a silversmith at Truro College. After just two and a half years, they needed bigger premises again and have taken on the jewellery studio on the opposite side of the harbour, formerly known as The Bijou Box, presenting Pennington and Pennington Jewellers.

Of the move, Clair says: “We’re delighted! It’s a big risk, especially with a young family, but this gives us space to display
our work properly, and look after customers without treading on anyone’s toes! It’s a lovely space and with such a wonderful atmosphere.”

Paul adds: “We can show the work of other Cornish artists we admire too. We’re both really looking forward to a great time here in Porthleven. We love this place!” Clair continues.

The duo’s profile has grown through carrying out repairs as well as creating original designs and bespoke commissions, fast proving a hit in the village and further afield. The Jewellery Workshop also stocks a wide range of watches, including Tour De France sponsor, Festina, as well as watch straps and bracelet pins.

In addition to in-house repairs and replacing watch batteries, Clair and Paul create bespoke wedding and engagement rings, among other commissions, to create that special unique item to cherish forever.

Clair and Paul have kept their old workshop to train others, giving evening classes and long-term courses for beginners and improvers, teaching different techniques in jewellery making. If you have previous experience you can even ‘rent a bench’ for the day and make use of all the equipment and facilities.

So pop into The Jewellery Workshop (Pennington and Pennington) on the road to the clock tower; you’ll be made to feel very welcome!
