Cornwall Living 2017

The Magic of Mawgan Porth

Head to this gem on the north coast for a day on the beach with a host of things eat, see and do.

Mawgan Porth is a gorgeous sandy cove, roughly halfway between Newquay and Padstow on the rugged north coast. Beloved of surfers, here you’ll find a buzzing atmosphere, amazing watersports, smart hotels and chic shops. It’s no secret that Cornwall is laced with countless surfing beaches and Mawgan Porth is certainly one of them, with the relaxed, cruisey way of life to match. Popping to your feet for the first time and riding the ocean’s rolling waves is a truly exhilarating experience. Throwing unlimited shakas comes as standard, and is totally free!

But there’s so much to do here besides surfing. Whether couples, families, or groups of friends; looking for action or simply time to relax. Scenic walks along the South West Coast Path, taking in stunning views, are a great way to unwind and step back from the daily strains of life. And if you enjoy pampering in a beautiful setting, there’s a choice of two incredible cliff-top hotels with spas offering the ultimate in luxury.

A spot of retail therapy is never a bad thing and you’re spoilt for choice among the fantastic beachside boutiques. We’ve selected a couple of our favourties here. And then, having enjoyed all the amazing things that Mawgan Porth has to offer, why not top it off by hiring a campervan to take in some more of the fantastic Cornish coast in true style?

Bedruthan Hotel and Scarlet Hotel

Do you love to watch the sun set into the sea and the waves pound the cliffs as surfers come and go? Then you’ll love the sister hotels, Scarlet and Bedruthan, minutes apart on the clifftop overlooking Mawgan Porth. Both embrace a sustainable, buy-local approach to food. Drink in the beautiful surroundings at the adult-only Scarlet Restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows, an alfresco terrace for sunny days, and a regularly changing, seasonal menu. It’s one of the most romantic sunset spots in Cornwall.

At Bedruthan, the Wild Café offers a laid back, bistro atmosphere and serves a menu of delicious homemade burgers, stonebaked pizzas, tapas and daily specials. The Herring, Cornwall Tourism Awards Restaurant of the Year 2014, is a little more daring and intimate and makes another perfect spot for sundown.

Disco Beads

If you fancy a break from the beach, take a stroll over to Disco Beads, the home of funky, reflective jewellery. This amazing, handmade, colourful jewellery uses cat’s eye technology to give the beads a glowing appearance. As well as offering an incredible choice of styles and colours, you can also visit the newly extended making room to create your own unique pieces.

Although popular with kids, many grown-ups also find the experience therapeutic, relishing the opportunity to make something special, either for themselves or as a gift to take home. Once you’ve discovered this unique jewellery, nothing else quite matches up. No visit to Mawgan Porth would be complete without grabbing some Disco Beads!

Let’s Go! Campervan

There’s no better way to see Cornwall than from behind the wheel of a campervan, especially with a road trip planned and a mixtape on the go! If you get into Cornwall by train or plane, your VW California SE will be there waiting for you. And if you’re making the trip from London, drive out of the capital and enjoy the ride as you chase the surf around the coast.

The California takes the best of campervan adventures and makes them more comfortable. Sleeping up to four adult-sized people, with room for your luggage, the California is a great home-on-the-road. Dining will be a camping experience with a few essential home comforts such as two-ring gas hob, fridge and water tank along with an outside dining area for those long summer evenings by the beach.
