Cornwall Living 2016

Telegraph Museum Porthcurno

Re-opening in mid-June following extensive development. The award-winning Telegraph Museum Porthcurno brings together innovative exhibitions and family-friendly experiences in a unique historic setting. This is unlike any other museum you’ve experienced before!

A hub of high-tech global communications since 1870, Porthcurno was at the centre of a communications revolution. High-tech cables laid from the sheltered, sandy beach linked this quiet Cornish valley to the four corners of the globe. Where previously a message could take days, weeks or even months to send overseas by packet ship, the undersea cables could deliver a message in just minutes. Our world had been changed forever.

New exhibitions explore how this hidden technology first wired our world, and how Porthcurno became one of the most connected places on the planet.

Hands-on exhibitions, live demonstrations and atmospheric WWII tunnels will inspire visitors of all ages. Rich with images, sounds, stories and daily activities, the new museum experience is more sensory and surprising than ever. Ab Rogers; hailed as “brilliantly original” by client Heston Blumenthal; has overseen design of Cornwall’s freshest exhibitions.

The hidden WWII tunnels are another gem to uncover. Built to protect Porthcurno’s cable station from attack, they not only give away the vital importance of Porthcurno to the war effort, but provide an atmospheric home for a working collection that will transfer you back in time.Don’t miss the impressive escape steps; carved into the granite Cliffside and transporting you to a viewing platform high above the valley.

A bright new café will focus on seasonal produce; locally sourced wherever possible. Free to visit whether or not you’re visiting the exhibitions, it’s the perfect spot for a light lunch, a cooling ice-cream, or coffee and cake over a catch-up with friends. The outdoor seating area also welcomes four-legged friends.

A stone throw from one of Cornwall’s best beaches and the world famous Minack Theatre, the Telegraph Museum Porthcurno completes your family day out to Porthcurno. Outdoor spaces offer room to relax or let off energy; interactive sculpture gardens, green picnic areas and even historic tennis courts make up the museum’s extensive grounds. You definitely won’t run out of things to do in Porthcurno.
