Cornwall Living 2018

A winter wonder

Enjoy a wild wintery escape at Artist Residence in Penzance.

Well, it’s here. Winter has well and truly arrived, and the dark, cold evenings have us all dreaming of a cosy getaway. Whilst west Cornwall is best known for its beautiful beaches and summer holidays, there is actually a great deal to be said for a wintery escape to the wild west coast; blustery cliff walks, storm watching from a cosy harbourside pub, wandering the winding streets of galleries and gift shops without the crowds… the list goes on. And for a suitably off-beat retreat, boutique bolthole Artist Residence is the perfect base, tucked away in a charming side street in the coastal town Penzance.

Opened in 2011, Artist Residence Penzance is the second in a small group of family run boutique hotels founded by young couple, Justin and Charlotte Salisbury. A selection of ‘Arty’ bedrooms are adorned with murals by British artists, whilst ‘House’ rooms are designed by the couple in their own eclectic style, featuring vintage and reclaimed furnishings – Sri Lankan tea chests make statement bedside tables, whilst green glass bottles become table lamps – all complemented by a quirky selection of limited edition art prints.

Luxurious bathrooms feature powerful rainfall showers, some with freestanding bathtubs, whilst the bedrooms have comfy king size beds and mini Smeg fridges stocked with locally sourced goodies. Opt for The Lookout suite for the best in the house – complete with copper bathtub, kitchenette and a log burner for cosy evenings in, looking out over the Penzance rooftops to Mousehole. For larger groups The Cottage is available for up to six adults.

And the cosiness need not stop there. Downstairs you’ll find rustic smokehouse restaurant and bar, The Cornish Barn, with a comforting and hearty menu using local meat and fi sh – the Beer-Can Chicken is a favourite, gently smoked on a can of ale for a deliciously distinctive and rich flavour. There’s a comfy bar and lounge for pre or post dinner drinks, complete with squashy sofas and a log burner, making this the perfect spot to unwind and cosy up with a glass of wine or two.
