A helping hand

With millions of people in Britain left without safe and secure housing, Shelter shows us how we can help.

In the midst of a housing emergency that calls for real change, Shelter is a charity that defends the right to a safe home by offering free local and legal advice, running an emergency helpline 365 days a year and leading national campaigns to fight for change at the top, plus much more.

Just one of the many people who faced a housing emergency was Sarah, who alongside her family was forced out of her housing association home after her mother sadly passed away. For the next three years, they lived in temporary accommodation, sometimes without light, heating, or hot water. Shelter began supporting Sarah when she got in touch with the charity to share her story.

One of Shelter’s solicitors worked alongside her and made sure that the council officially recognised Sarah’s accommodation wasn’t suitable. Sarah is now in a safe, secure social home. Sarah explains: “If I didn’t get any help from Shelter, I probably would have ended up in another temporary accommodation. Then how would I live for the future? Now, I’m happy and secure. My son is overjoyed. I’m just really, really grateful to Shelter.”

Would you like to be a part of the positive change that transforms futures? You can have a direct impact on those struggling with housing by leaving a gift in your will to fund the future of those left without a home. Shelter has partnered with expert will writing services to help you write your will for free! You can do this online or on the phone from the comfort of your own home, or by speaking face to face with a trusted solicitor.

By writing your will for free and including a gift to Shelter, you can give families like Sarah’s real hope for the future. This could help build a generation of new homes and affect the development of new rent reform laws. Right now, 101,300 households are still living in temporary accommodation in England, the highest level in almost 20 years. Your gift will give generations of families like Sarah’s the change they need.
