Gulls wheel over Falmouth’s working harbour as lunch service gets underway at The Greenbank, where the Water’s Edge restaurant opens straight onto the water and the smell of something buttery drifts out from the kitchen. This is a hotel that takes its food seriously, and this season it has given diners three good reasons to book a table.
First, there’s the deal that solves the age-old dilemma of ordering pudding on a weekday. Available Monday to Saturday from 12pm until 2.30pm, it delivers three courses for £24, dessert included, built from the same seasonal, Cornish-leaning menu that has made head chef Bobby Southworth’s kitchen a name to know along the south coast. Portions are served as a lighter, lunch-suited take on the full dinner menu. We recommend booking ahead as demand for this tasty offer tends to be brisk.
Come December, the focus shifts to Christmas. The festive lunch menu runs throughout the month from 12pm until 3pm and offers three courses for £35, with hand-rolled turkey paupiette, a prime white fish stew with samphire and a cranberry and pecan nut roast among the mains, followed by desserts that stretch from spiced clementine crème brûlée to a properly traditional Christmas pudding with brandy sauce. Evening sittings and a festive afternoon tea are also on offer for anyone keen to spread their yuletide gatherings across the month.
For something decadent after dark, Cocktail Club takes over the Water’s Edge bar every Friday from 5pm until late, with two cocktails for £20. The list runs from a classic Negroni and Old Fashioned to a Bramble made with Tarquin’s Blackberry Gin and a spicy jalapeño Margarita, all served with a side of harbour lights through the window. Ask to keep a table if food is on the cards too.
