A welcome take on a classic

All the flavour of Proper Job, reworked for those who want real beer taste with less alcohol

With Dry January already upon us, St Austell Brewery is making a clear case for moderation without compromise. Proper Job 0.5% is the low-alcohol interpretation of its best-known IPA, created for drinkers who want flavour and satisfaction while cutting back on alcoholic intake. 

Released in October 2024 after more than two years of development, Proper Job 0.5% has arrived with confidence. In a short space of time, it has collected four major awards, including Gold from the Beer and Bottling Institute and Taste of the West, alongside recognition at the World Alcohol Free Awards and the World Beer Awards. With the no and low beer category growing, Proper Job 0.5% sets the benchmark for others to follow.

The brewing brief was straightforward but demanding: create a beer that tastes recognisably like Proper Job. To do that, the team used Cascade, Willamette and Chinook hops, the same found in the full-strength IPA. The result is a beer with clear citrus, grapefruit and pineapple notes, delivered with a clean, crisp finish that feels genuinely beer-like. St Austell Brewery’s Brewing Director, Georgina Young, said: “Low and no-alcohol drinks have been around for decades, but there’s been a significant increase in demand over the past five years.

“Knowing how loved Proper Job is amongst beer drinkers, we opted to respond to this demand by bringing the big, vivid flavours of our flagship brand to the low-alcohol market.

“Whilst it’s been a long time coming for St Austell Brewery to release a low-alcohol beer, we took time to evolve a brewing method that would create a naturally authentic IPA, worthy of being branded Proper Job 0.5%. We wouldn’t settle for anything less than a well-bodied, tasty IPA without the alcohol, and we’ve finally perfected a recipe which has nailed that.”

She added: “Taste testing was the final stage in our journey and we were thrilled it was deemed the overwhelming favourite against many of our competitors in extensive tests.”

Proper Job 0.5% is available from the brewery’s online shop and supermarkets nationwide. For Dry January, and beyond, this is a beer that treats moderation as a conscious choice.
