Air source heat pumps are one of the UK’s most renewable heating solutions. They comprise of a unit that sits externally, with a fan that draws air in. Internally, a refrigerant gas is kept cooler than the external air temperature so that when this air passes over the gas, its temperature rises. The refrigerant gas is then compressed causing an upgrade in the heat to what is required to provide space heating and hot water. This heat then passes through a heat exchanger and is distributed around your property. As these units are designed to work alongside your existing central heating system, and require just a hot water cylinder internally, installation causes minimal disruption to the home.
And that’s not the only benefit, as air source heat pumps are listed as one of the primary measures eligible for the Green Homes Grant, two-thirds of the cost to upgrade your heating system could be covered – up to a total of £5,000. Combine that with subsidies available through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a scheme that pays home and business owners for the renewable heat generated by this type of heating system, and installation costs are regularly being fully recovered.
