Cornwall LivingIssue #76

Art of the people

We catch up with Jeremy Sanders, who explains his recent move towards capturing the essence of Cornwall’s unique way of life.

Jeremy Sanders is now into his second summer living, working and painting around west Cornwall. He has been particularly inspired by the light that this part of the country enjoys at this time of year, enhanced by the fact that the Duchy is almost surrounded by water.

“it was visiting the Stanhope Forbes exhibition last summer at the Penlee House Gallery that has reignited my passion!”

He tells us that he is increasingly focussing on capturing those working and living in the local area and has been recreating unique events, including Flora Day in Helston and Mazey Day in Penzance. He’s also dipped into various food festivals that the region is famed for and is currently talking with some great local brands, who have been kind enough to offer him the chance to explore and paint around their businesses.

“This figurative subject matter has always been of interest to me, having spent many years painting the streets of Cuba and South America. But it was visiting the Stanhope Forbes exhibition last summer at the Penlee House Gallery that has reignited my passion!

“Forbes brilliantly and famously captured real people in their everyday lives at the same time that the impressionists were painting in France. He also worked outside – or ‘en plein air’ – and this is something I’m striving to do much more of.”

If you’ve been meaning to indulge your creative side, you can join Jeremy for a day and enjoy some one to one outdoor tuition. For just £95, which includes materials and equipment, Jeremy guarantees you’ll create a painting fit to take home and display.

This August, on Monday 20th until Thursday 23rd, 12pm to 7pm, and then on Friday 24th August from 10am until 4pm, Jeremy will be painting and exhibiting at the Old Lifeboat House in Porthleven. But fear not! If those dates in your diary are already booked up, you can visit Jeremy’s studio throughout the summer by appointment.
