Declare your love for Cornwall with unique designs by Jo Downs.
The truly unique is a hard thing to come by in today’s interior design market. So, what if we could express our love for the beauty of Cornwall, for its landscape, its natural diversity and its special quality of light, all in one handcrafted, bespoke artwork? Enter Jo Downs, whose unique creations are inspired by all things Cornwall, and with her galleries now reopened throughout Cornwall, they are a destination for the beautifully bespoke.
As a specialist fused glass designer, and one of the most respected in her field, Jo has 20 years of experience making spectacular artworks and installations for clients across the world. “I love a challenge,” says Jo, “and that has meant experimentation, and investment. Once upon a time I was just one artist with one little kiln. Now I have skilled glass makers working with me, a great studio with equipment that allows me to fire small giftware through to dramatic statement pieces, and honestly it’s wonderful being where I am now, especially after such a challenging few months, with so much scope and so many inspirational ideas to work on.”
Since launching her iconic Shoaling Fish collection in 2014, wall-mounted installations have become a large part of Jo’s portfolio: “Installations are so adaptable and that makes them a great option for lots of spaces, no matter how wide or tall. They are made from individual pieces and they can be combined to make a huge variety of overall designs.” Jo has enjoyed hundreds of private commissions and her work can be seen on the walls of hotels, cruise liners and corporate headquarters as well as in private homes.
With almost all her fused glass art the one constant is Cornwall – its special colours, shapes and textures. “Customers with homes in Cornwall and those visiting really appreciate the special qualities of this area,” says Jo. “We are surrounded by such a stunning landscape – that’s what drew me here – and people want to bring that beauty into their homes, and to celebrate it! If I can make that happen with my artwork, that’s a really rewarding thing.”
