Coastal escapes November 2019
Beautiful stays in Porthleven, Lerryn and Tregonetha.
Customs House Loft, Porthleven
Nestled by the harbour in Porthleven and housed in a Grade II listed building that dates back to the 1840s, the Customs House Loft sleeps four in bright and spacious luxury. The apartment has been carefully decorated with marine-inspired tones, complementing its coastal locale, and you’ll quickly realise that for hosts John and Louise, it’s all about the detail.
Each of the two bedrooms is an oasis of calm, with White Company towels and bedding and an Atlantic blanket carefully folded on each bed. For those staying with their furry friend, dogs are given their very own basket of blankets to help them feel at home, while human guests are greeted with a freshly baked cream tea, courtesy of owner and charming host, Louise.
Into the vast living and dining area and you’ll quickly notice two comfortable chairs, set before a beautiful triptych of windows that frame the gorgeous harbour views. There are even binoculars provided, equally ideal for dolphin spotting and storm watching!
The village itself is a fantastic base from which to explore, boasting an excellent selection of restaurants and cafés. For beach days, Porthleven’s sandy beach lies just moments from your door, perfect for buckets and spades, and dog friendly on its eastern side all year round.
Roselyn Cottage, Lerryn
Sleeping up to six across three comfortable bedrooms, Roselyn Cottage lies in the heart of the magical village of Lerryn on the beautiful Fowey river. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful handcrafted kitchen and open-plan living area, perfect for those hoping to make the most of the self-catering side of their stay, while a woodburner in the sitting area is just the ticket for getting cosy during the colder months. It’s outside, however, that this property really comes into its own – the gorgeous, wood-fired Finnish hot tub a tempting prospect on those crisp, clear winter evenings.
Roselyn Cottage welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs, and the local area is a dog walker’s paradise, offering up walks aplenty alongside the river Lerryn and through the area’s abundant rolling countryside. The village is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque in south Cornwall too, its essence lying in ‘messing about on the river’. Sound good? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that guests at Roselyn have access to two sit-on kayaks, complete with buoyancy aids, meaning you can make the most of the waterways that make Lerryn such an idyllic location for an escape.
Old Barn, Tregonetha
With its unique and contemporary eco-friendly design and peaceful location not far from the bustling fishing port of Padstow, this is a stylish self-catering barn conversion that’s proving extremely popular with guests looking for character and luxury in every detail.
Outside, Old Barn offers enclosed lawned gardens, barbeque facilities and ample parking, plus a charging port for electric cars! Inside, the spacious living room, with its high vaulted ceiling, offers plenty of space to relax, with the added bonus of a woodburner, perfect for those cooler evenings spent snuggling on the sofa.
Three luxurious bedrooms complete the accommodation, with the master on the first floor enjoying its own en suite with a deep slipper bathtub. Underfloor heating runs throughout, helping to keep things cosy. Indeed, there’s a distinct ‘house in the country’ feel about the property, thanks to the original and exposed features dotted throughout, as well as the traditional Aga stove in the kitchen.
All of this, on top of the fact that it actually is a house in the country just 20 minutes from Padstow – arguably Cornwall’s premier foodie destination – makes Old Barn, Tregonetha the perfect stay for anybody hoping to make the most of their visit to north Cornwall.
