Cornwall LivingIssue #98

The crest of the wave

Mike Lacey’s stunning water photography is once again taking Cornwall by storm.

It’s great to hear that so many businesses are re-opening across Cornwall, and not least that our friends at Waves Surf Art Gallery are back up and running with some exciting new images to reveal and projects to announce. We were able to catch up with the man behind the lens, Mike Lacey, to find out how he coped with lockdown and what the future holds for his galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth.

“We live in the most amazing place in the world” – Mike

“Time out of the water during lockdown has made me really appreciate what we have on our doorstep and to find happiness in the small things,” explains Mike. “We live in the most amazing place in the world and I feel so lucky to be able to go out every day and capture these magical moments and bring them back to the galleries to share with everyone. That first jump back in the sea after lockdown was an amazing moment, it felt like I was able to breathe again.”

Mike has been really busy getting new images made up for the galleries as well as working on two brand-new books. The first is a second edition of the ever-popular Cornish Waves series entitled Chasing Perfection. This stunning hardback volume features 160 pages of Mike’s favourite images from chasing swells around Cornwall for the last five years. It is a volume that should take pride of place on any ocean-lover’s coffee table. The second is a children’s book, Coral & The Cornish Heart, which is a true story centred around the now-famous Cornish Heart photograph that Mike captured the day before his daughter Coral was born. “It will feature lots of Cornish landmarks as well as some of my favourite photos,” says Mike, “with amazing illustrations created by local illustrator Hermione Mills.” Both books are published in July and are available to pre-order from the Waves Surf Art Gallery website.

Mike and the team are really looking forward to welcoming people back into their galleries: “We hope you all have a great summer. Please support local businesses and keep safe!”
