Discover Brilliance

Making the most of school open days.

Aschool’s Open Day is an opportunity for prospective families to experience its ethos, facilities, and atmosphere. While these events may not perfectly reflect a ‘regular’ school day, they provide valuable insights into whether a school will be a good fit for your child.

At Truro School, they believe that the best way to understand what makes their school special is by talking to the people who know it best – the pupils and teachers. Their open events, which include a pre-prep, prep school, senior school, and sixth form Open Day, are designed to give families plenty of opportunities to do both.

The pupils are without doubt Truro School’s best ambassadors, and as tour guides, they help showcase the school’s values-based approach, which balances academic excellence with the development of well-rounded individuals. Visiting families can learn a lot by talking to current pupils. While tours will highlight the school’s best aspects, genuine insights often emerge when pupils share their honest opinions about favourite (or least favourite) subjects, teachers, or school life.

Teachers play an equally vital role in shaping a child’s experience. Taking the time to speak with subject specialists and pastoral leaders can provide a clearer picture of how the school supports academic progress, individual learning styles, and personal development. Conversations with teachers can also reveal the school’s approach to education beyond the curriculum – how they inspire curiosity, grow confidence, and support pupil well-being. Whether it’s discussing the structure of a typical school day, the balance of challenge and support in lessons, or the opportunities for enrichment outside the classroom, these interactions can help parents gauge whether the school’s ethos aligns with
their expectations.

Our advice is to plan plenty of time for an Open Day. Choosing a new school can be stressful and feeling rushed or unable to delve into certain topics or concerns can be frustrating. Truro School’s open events provide a time for talks with leadership teams, classroom activities, informal chats with current parents and admissions support.

Truro School always encourages visitors to think beyond a single open event. With the option to return for a private tour or a taster day, this gives the opportunity for an even deeper understanding of what makes this school truly great.
