Energy costs reconsidered

Solar, battery storage and heat pumps are giving Cornwall homeowners greater control over energy costs.

Energy bills have made the workings of the home energy system harder to ignore, particularly for households in Cornwall that rely on oil or LPG for heating. For the GreenGenUK team, that has led to growing interest in combining renewable technologies so that electricity generation, storage and heating can work together.

Solar PV provides a way to generate electricity, while battery storage can hold surplus power for use later. That can help households use the electricity their panels produce, including when generation from the sun has fallen.

Adding an air source heat pump brings heating into the equation. For properties heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can make the change more accessible. Since the 21st of July 2026,
eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating with an air-to-water heat pump can receive a £9,000 grant, with the uplift running until the 31st of March 2027. Eligibility and installation requirements apply.

GreenGenUK, based in Helston, specialises in solar PV, battery storage and heat pump systems across the South West. Its work has also received regional and national recognition, winning the Regional Renewable Heat Installer and Contractor of the Year 2026 and placing  third in the Energy Efficiency Awards’ National Renewable Heating Installer of the Year category in the previous year. These awards are in recognition of an exceptional company that is involved with the installation, implementation or maintenance of energy efficient heating systems that meet the Government’s definition of Renewable Heat Measures.

For homeowners considering an energy upgrade, the starting point is the property itself. GreenGenUK can assess how technologies might work together, helping customers understand the options before deciding where to invest. With energy costs likely to remain a consideration, taking a whole-home view can turn individual technologies into a coherent energy system.
