Explore the Helford

Experience the captivating beauty of the Helford river with Toad Hall Cottages.

Encompassing over 50 miles of secluded shores, sandy coves and tranquil waters, the Helford river remains one of Cornwall’s most sought-after holiday locations. West Country specialist, Toad Hall Cottages, has over 30 self-catering properties in the area, from former coastguard’s cottages with panoramic river views, to luxury beachside apartments with pools. With a head office at Helford Passage, the Toad Hall Cottages team know the area like the back of their hand, and have put together six of their favourite things to do whilst visiting this beautiful area.

1. Get out on the water

Enjoy a kayak adventure with Koru Kayaking to Frenchman’s Creek, the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier’s famous book; or hire a paddleboard, dingy or rowing boat at Helford Passage. Alternatively, enjoy a magical afternoon exploring the gentle meanderings of this beautiful river on a skippered cruise with Helford River Cruises.

2. Visit the Cornish Seal Sanctuary

Set on the banks of the Helford River, The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a fantastic day out for all ages where visitors can spend time with seal pups and watch the seals gracefully swimming underwater.

3. Helford Passage Beach

The beach at Helford Passage is ideal for families, and lazy days spent here paddling and swimming in the creek, crabbing, rockpooling or messing about in boats won’t disappoint.

4. Explore the local gardens

Enjoy the stunning botanical garden and woodlands at Trelowarren Estate, surround yourselves with exotic blooms and get lost in the maze at Glendurgan, or wander through the sub-tropical paradise of Trebah Gardens.

5. Beachside beers at The Ferryboat Inn

At this lovely waterside pub you can indulge in some delicious local fish and seafood, or simply enjoy a cold drink on the beachside terrace while you take in the fabulous views.

6. Take a waterside walk

From the sunken water gardens of Rosemullion Head, to the tranquil shores of Frenchman’s Creek, The Helford river provides some of the region’s most stunning and scenic walks.
