Camel Estuary 2025

Fancy something different?

Then step inside one of Cornwall’s most striking slices of history – Bodmin Jail.

Situated on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Bodmin Jail is one of Cornwall’s most atmospheric and compelling visitor attractions, offering a powerful blend of immersive storytelling, heritage and experience-led discovery for all ages.

Originally built in 1779, this historic former prison underwent a £10 million transformation in 2020, re-emerging as a world-class heritage destination. Featuring state-of-the-art technology, museum-grade interpretation and a focus on the stories of real prisoners, Bodmin Jail brings the 18th and 19th-century Cornish penal system vividly to life.

Highlights include the award-winning Dark Walk, a spectacular immersive experience that transports you into the past through cinematic sets, special effects and haunting narratives. You’ll uncover tales of crime, punishment, and survival, and walk the same corridors where some of Cornwall’s most infamous inmates once stood.

Visitors can choose between a Self-Guided visit or join one of the Guided Tours, which offer deeper insights into the architecture, social history, and hidden corners of the jail. For braver souls, there are also the hugely popular After Dark Paranormal Tours – evening experiences that explore the jail’s reputation as one of the most ‘haunted’ places in the UK.

With a café serving locally sourced produce, a well-stocked gift shop and regular family-friendly activities during school holidays, Bodmin Jail offers something for everyone, from curious kids to seasoned history buffs.

New for 2025: interactive exhibitions, seasonal events and a growing programme of community and conservation work, including bat awareness and sustainable tourism initiatives.

Only a short drive from Padstow and the Camel Estuary, Bodmin Jail makes for a fascinating and memorable day out, rain
or shine.
