Occupying a beautiful spot on Porthleven’s historic harbourside and showcasing a diverse collection of original work by established artists, the Customs House Gallery is the perfect place to visit if you’re still struggling to find gifts for those hard-to-buy-for loved ones. Indeed, inside you’ll find an array of unique, original gifts, starting from under £20 and suiting all tastes and budgets.
Since its launch in 1995, this Porthleven gallery has become renowned for its exhibitions of work from some of the finest local artists. It was acquired in 2012 by the current owners, John and Louise Winterton, who have only continued to develop this sterling reputation and today, more than 50 artists are represented here, with works ranging from original paintings, sculpture, ceramics and glasswork, to metalwork, woodwork, jewellery and textiles.

Indeed, it’s not just a superb range of gift ideas you’ll find with a visit to the Customs House this winter. As the temperatures drop and we begin spending more time indoors, many of us start noticing ‘bare’ patches on our walls, patches that would be perfect for accommodating our favourite pieces of art. For many, however, cost can be an issue, which is why the Customs House is proud to be a part of the Own Art Scheme, which makes original art affordable by spreading the cost over ten months with no interest to pay. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, John and Louise also offer a bespoke framing service, allowing you to display your beautiful new piece in all its glory.
The gallery is open daily from 10.30am to 5pm until Christmas, then six days a week until Easter, closing on Mondays. Outside of these hours, you’ll be pleased to know that John and Louise have recently revamped their website, allowing you to order that piece of art you’ve been coveting at the click of a button!
