Finding sanctuary
Situated along the Helford River, the SEA LIFE TRUST, Cornish Seal Sanctuary is more than just a visitor attraction.
It’s a lifeline for injured, orphaned and vulnerable marine animals. Every year, the Sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates around sixty grey seal pups from the Cornish coastline, offering them expert veterinary care and a second chance at a healthy life in the wild. With each pup costing, on average, £2,000 to rehabilitate, this cost doesn’t include special cases such as those needing surgery or extended medical care.
But their work doesn’t end there. The Sanctuary provides a permanent home to twelve resident seals and eleven Atlantic puffins, who, due to injury or illness, are not able to be returned to the wild. For them, the Sanctuary is their haven, providing them with a safe and enriching environment for the rest of their lives. Their inspiring rescue stories provide the perfect platform to educate visitors about important issues such as plastic pollution, human disturbance, the threats facing their habitats and the importance of marine conservation. Working alongside The Beaver Trust, the Sanctuary also provides a secure woodland habitat for orphaned beaver kits to grow and thrive in their natural environment before being rehomed.
Visit the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to see these incredible animals up close, learn how to help safeguard our seas, and have a fantastic day out! Dogs are also very welcome.
