Fine food

A new delicatessen, The Cornish Kitchen, comes to Falmouth with shelves stocked full of luxury, locally sourced products.

It was actually the Cornish pasty that drew the Frankiss family to Cornwall, when in 2017 they moved to the Duchy to take over a pasty shop in Falmouth, Their very popular pasty café, Oggies Cornish Kitchen, is an extension of the family’s love of food and Cornwall. However, knowing that there is so much more to Cornish food than the pasty, they wanted to find a new and additional way to celebrate the plethora of amazing Cornish food producers across the county.

The answer came in the shape of The Cornish Kitchen, a luxury deli that opened its doors last month to great acclaim, showcasing the unusual and the artisan. We caught up with owners Rebecca and John who told us: “We have been very lucky to find a premises very close to our existing shop with an outside seating area. This new space will allow us to share our love of all Cornish food and to showcase a wide range of local producers and artisans.”

Expect Cornish culinary delights such as Cornish Charcuterie, Popti crackers and Little Pod truffle oil; fresh produce from Patrick’s Patch and Roots and Shoots; and a carefully curated selection of local wines, cider and Cornwall’s only organic gin ‘Land of Saints’, from The Cornish Spirits Drink Company. Rebecca adds: “We are also developing a strong vegan and gluten-free section as this is very important to us. We will be carrying ReRooted Milks –  organic, plant-based alternatives supplied in cute glass bottles. The bottles can be brought back and exchanged for a new one. We then return the used ones to ReRooted who recycle and refill the bottles – we really love this idea of a no waste circuit.”

The ethos is very much to champion small growers and producers, but John and Rebecca will be led by demand and are happy to source any special products at their customers’ request. They also offer a fantastic local area delivery service for any orders over £10. This is ideal if you would like to order a particular cheese to end your dinner party, fancy sampling one of their great deli plates or want a night off the cooking with their tasty range of bake-at-home dishes – all delivered direct to your door!

The Cornish Kitchen has a pretty outdoor patio area where you can enjoy a glass of wine and sample a small plate, or relax with a barista coffee (local of course!) and a pastry and happily while away an hour watching the world go by.
