Getting back on track

If you’re in need of help or advice regarding a pain or injury,Cornwall Medical Group is on hand to help.

With over 20 million people in the UK said to be currently suffering from painful joints, ligaments, tendons or muscular pain, it is unsurprising that current services are struggling to meet the demand. Symptoms of pain can be caused by an ongoing condition such as a repetitive strain injury (RSI), osteoarthritis, or from an acute injury such as a stress fracture or sprain. Whatever the cause, pain can leave us feeling worn down and prevent us from doing the things we love.

Thanks to a new Pain and Injury Service at Cornwall Medical Group (CMG), Cornwall now has access to an easy way to reduce the symptoms of a range of common musculoskeletal pains. Consultations are now available to book at CMG’s clinic in Probus, with Sports and Exercise Doctor, Dr Chris Ireland. We caught up with Dr Ireland to see how this service is helping people across Cornwall to get back to doing what they love. “You don’t have to have a sports or exercise-related injury to come to see me,” Dr Ireland begins, “a Sports and Exercise Doctor simply specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and injuries.”

The Pain and Injury Service has been set up at CMG to provide a one-stop-shop for assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing rehabilitation. The team consists of highly trained clinicians, with close ties to GPs, Radiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists and more. They can use previous scans or diagnostics, diagnose in-house, or rapidly get you access to diagnostics to get to the bottom of what is causing your pain.

The service also includes evidence-based biological interventions that may not be readily available on the NHS, including regenerative therapies like Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) and Ostenil Injections (Hyaluronic Acid or HA injections). These use your body’s own ‘healing powers’ to restore strength and tissue integrity.

At CMG, they use ultrasound imaging to guide their treatments, to ensure tissue-specific delivery and optimised pain relief; there is no ‘guesswork’ involved at any stage. Focussing on proven, fast and efficient methods that are minimally invasive and promote rapid return-to-activity times, everything is done under one roof, making it easier and faster to reduce your pain and get you back moving again.

CMG’s Pain and Injury Service can help in the treatment of conditions including osteoarthritis, frozen shoulders (adhesive capsulitis), tendon degeneration (tendinopathy) of the ankle, knee and shoulder, repetitive strain injuries, sprains and stress fractures. The service also provides help with sports-specific injuries and assessment, obesity and functional nutrition, return-to-activity assessments and much, much more.
