Gin o’clock

We discover the delicate botanicals and expert flavour combinations that go into a bottle of Curio spirit.

Curio is a small family business owned and run by Rubina and William Tyler-Street from their base in Mullion.

William tells us: “We have an integral understanding of flavours and what they bring to a dish and have applied this knowledge to our spirit range,” an influence that can be seen in Curio’s cardamom vodka, which is full of zesty spice and, when paired with a soft drink such as Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade, tastes like Turkish delight.

“During a walk from our garden and along the coast path from Mullion to the Lizard, the inspiration for Wild Coast Gin was born”

“During a walk from our garden and along the coast path from Mullion to the Lizard, the inspiration for Wild Coast Gin was born – the scent of flowers in the garden, the fragrance of pine in the fields, the fresh sea breeze with a hint of salinity on the lips, the aromas from the wild plants and flowers along the coastline – all this is captured in a bottle of Curio gin,” says Rubina.

Passionate about provenance, creativity and innovation – Rubina and William wanted to create spirits that are not the norm. “Our locality is so special and unique due to its landscape and flora and this is what we wanted to replicate in our Wild Coast Gin.” Just like a good wine has grapes from its region, Curio’s Wild Coast Gin incorporates the flavours of Cornwall with rock samphire and seaweed botanicals, hand-foraged from Cornwall’s coastline, providing distinctive Cornish flavours for everyone to savour.

Rubina and William have grown their offering in recent years from making 36 bottles in a batch in their kitchen, to making several batches at a time in a larger unit, which can produce 700 bottles a day! In busy times, William’s mum and sister will help to label and pack cases, and his dad (being an expert tea planter with a nose) assists in tasting batches, to make sure they’re of the same quality and taste across the board – a dedication that has lead to Curio winning multiple awards for both taste and quality.

“We love what we do and love meeting customers at events, with many loyal fans of Curio Spirits – it’s become like a family or community.” The range continues to grow with Blueberry Gin now part of the collection and a soon to be released range of tequila, so watch this space for more great products from the Curio family!
