Helford Immersion
Discover the Helford River from a new perspective this summer, courtesy of Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Koru Kayaking.
Launching from Budock Vean Hotel & Spa, these two-hour guided kayaking trips offer a relaxed and immersive way to explore one of Cornwall’s most enchanting waterways and encounter its remarkable wildlife.
The Helford River is one of Cornwall’s most beautiful natural landscapes, where wooded creeks and rolling countryside meet crystal-clear coastal waters. As one of the county’s voluntary Marine Conservation Areas, the estuary stretches for more than 47 kilometres. Cornwall Wildlife Trust undertakes a wide range of work here to protect and enhance this internationally significant haven for wildlife, and a knowledgeable volunteer guide will share fascinating insights throughout the journey.
The route includes the tranquil waters of Frenchman’s Creek, famously associated with Daphne du Maurier and rich in birdlife. Keep an eye out for little egrets and grey herons along the shoreline and in the overhanging branches, while grey mullet glide quietly beneath the surface. The trip concludes with the option of a refreshing swim from Wytham Quay before paddling back to the hotel. Frenchman’s Creek is also one of the best places to spot one of Britain’s most striking birds: the Common Kingfisher. Drawn to calm, sheltered water, kingfishers often perch motionless on low branches before plunging into the water with extraordinary accuracy. Though small, they are instantly recognisable. Their brilliant electric-blue plumage flashes vividly, even on cloudy days. Kingfishers nest in tunnels burrowed into the creek banks, hidden from sight but close to the water that sustains them.
Guided trips are running on selected dates throughout June, July and August. As well as kayaking, there are also paddle boarding experiences and river cruises led by Cornwall Wildlife Trust volunteers. Guests are invited to make a voluntary donation when booking to support the Trust’s conservation work.
