On 5th August 1900, Guglielmo Marconi stayed at Housel Bay whilst he was conducting his experimental radio transmissions to Newfoundland. One of the hotel’s most famed guests, Marconi developed the first effective long-distance system of radio communication and in his honour, Housel Bay has named the hotel bar after him.
The Lizard is known for its sleepy fishing villages, hidden, secluded coves and clifftop walks. The famous and iconic Lizard Lighthouse was built in 1751 and marks the most southerly point of mainland Britain. Even today on a foggy night you can hear the atmospheric sound of the fog horn panning out across the coastline.
Recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, nature lovers will delight in the plethora of flora and fauna in the area. The Lizard’s warmer local climate generates an abundance of sub-tropical vegetation, creating a rainbow of colour all year round. There are also a variety of bird species to spot along your passage over the sea cliffs, with peregrines, ravens and the Cornish choughs regularly being sighted. Organic farming has been instigated on the Lizard as well, which Housel Bay takes full advantage of – serving locally grown meat and fish fresh from the surrounding ocean. What’s more, the South West Coast Path runs across the end of the hotel’s gardens, offering up a wealth of amazing walks to guests, right outside the hotel.
Each season has its own quality, from tranquil summer days with clear blue skies and still waters, to crisp autumnal walks and awe-inspiring winter storms, which you can sit and admire from The Terrace Restaurant.
If you want to enjoy a holiday that allows you to immerse yourself in the wild countryside and panoramic views of the Lizard peninsula; to escape from the every day stresses of busy modern life, get in touch with the Housel Bay team and make your dream holiday a reality.
