It’s the little things

We discuss the small ways to make a big difference in your home and for the environment with the team at Uneeka.

With both a furniture and home accessories store in Truro, Uneeka provides all aspects of interior design, with a difference. The company focuses on sourcing fair-trade quality products that stand out in the world of design, whilst still being environmentally aware. Team member Jess Preen talks us through the company values that are the backbone to their decisions in sourcing their beautiful and unique products.

“A big favourite for our customers are the reusable newspaper bags, a unique way of packing products and a great gift bag at the same time.”

Jess explains: “Uneeka was founded on the concept of good quality, fair trade, ethical products at a reasonable price. We’re always trying to introduce new and unusual ranges, whilst still asking our suppliers important ethical questions about their products.” One small change that Uneeka has made in its café (located above the lifestyle store) has been to reject single use plastics. Jess continues: “We now use biodegradable takeaway cups and sell reusable bamboo and rice husk cups, providing a free hot drink from the café on purchase.” Although a seemingly simple change, this will make a big difference to the amount of plastic waste being produced and unequivocally making its way into the ocean each year. Jess continues: “A big favourite for our customers are the reusable newspaper bags, a unique way of packing products and a great gift bag at the same time.” These bags are made from recycled newspapers by a charity in Delhi, one of Uneeka’s long-term Fairtrade suppliers, who they’ve been working with for 14 years.

Having recently expanded their offering to include a pet range, the team’s favourite picks are the dog leads, collars and even men’s belts made from recycled climbing gear by a small company here in the UK. Jess tells us: “It’s so great to find a well made product that supports local trade and has been made with recyclable materials. The quirky idea sits well with our ethos and looks great in our Uneeka shop too!” The team are always on the lookout for new suppliers who support their ideals, thereby making sure to keep the shop looking fresh and exciting, so next time you pop in you’re sure to find that perfect gift or piece
of furniture.
