Lace up your boots
Head to the Isles of Scilly this spring with your furry friend in tow and take part in this year’s Walk Scilly festival.
It’s that time of year again, spring is upon us and the weather is becoming tangibly warmer – nowhere more so than on the sub-tropical Isles of Scilly. And now that temperatures are on the rise, we here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living are gearing up for this year’s Walk Scilly, a ten day festival offering a choice of 40 themed and guided walks across nine of the islands within this most stunning archipelago.
“endless white sand beaches and rich, diverse habitats that are home to myriad flora and fauna”
Running from 3rd until 12th April, there are a number of walks that welcome dogs on leads, which makes it perfect for those of you looking to make the most of spring with your furry friend. 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly are simply made for walking. Unspoilt and uncrowded, they’re known for endless white sand beaches and rich, diverse habitats that are home to myriad flora and fauna. There’s no better way of exploring the islands’ amazing scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage than Walk Scilly’s rambles, hikes and strolls and, with expert local guides, the islands are well and truly brought to life.
It comes as no surprise that dogs absolutely love exploring the wild reaches of Scilly. Fortunately, Walk Scilly also welcomes dogs. Take a stroll through the fields of England’s most south-westerly farm on St Agnes with owner, Tim Hicks and his son, Sam, on the St Agnes Troytown Farm Walk, Talk and Tour. Or hop aboard the St Agnes Sea Safari. This isolated and rugged part of Scilly is home to much of the islands’ marine life, and guides on board the safari will point out and identify the interesting local residents, including seals, seabirds and possibly even puffins!
There are a whole host of fantastic walks taking place over the ten days, with plenty of opportunities to stop for lunch and enjoy a flavour of the isles. Not all of the walks are dog friendly, but don’t let that put you off – it means you can head out on your own and explore with just you and your furry friend, an incredible experience along the seemingly untouched reaches of such a wild part of the world.
April is a lovely time of year on the Isles of Scilly and this is a great festival to welcome both new and returning visitors to the islands. As walking festivals go, Walk Scilly is exceptional: friendly, intimate and distinctly Scillonian, with each walk offering a unique insight into island life. To see the full festival programme and to find out more, be sure to head to the Visit Isles of Scilly website. To book your walks, simply give the team a call!
