Modern Italian soul
There’s a new player in town; Ugo Massabo is bringing a taste of Italy to Cornwall and people are taking notice.
In a quiet corner of Cornwall, something extraordinary is simmering — and it’s not just a rich ragù. Meet Ugo Massabo. Milan-born, Cornwall-based, and the passionate force behind The Cornish Italian Ugo’s new culinary venture is fast becoming one of the county’s best-kept secrets.
You may have spotted his iconic TiramisUGO at local markets, or heard whispers of the rich carbonara made with Cornish guanciale. But now, from his permanent base at Chenoweth Business Park in Ruan High Lanes, Ugo is building more than just a restaurant. He’s creating an experience, one plate at a time.
“I want to bring a real taste of Italy to Cornwall with an offering made for the Italians in Italy, but in Cornwall. No compromise, just authenticity and passion,” explains Ugo. His journey to Cornwall wasn’t originally about food. “The food is Italian. The ingredients are Cornish wherever possible. What started with one family recipe — a creamy tiramisu in a jar, named TiramisUGO, – has evolved into a fast-growing food business driven by quality, seasonality and soul,” adds Ugo. At The Cornish Italian, the philosophy is simple: born in Italy, made in Cornwall.
From rich-yolk fresh pasta to pillowy focaccia and the beloved TiramisUGO, everything is crafted in-house from Italian roots, using Cornish ingredients.
You’ll also find weekly specials crafted from the best local produce, ranging from handmade gnocchi to regional favourites reimagined through Ugo’s modern lens. These ever-changing dishes are announced on the restaurant’s socials, keeping the menu as fresh as the ingredients.
While the setting may be unassuming, the flavours are bold and memorable. What makes The Cornish Italian so special is its authenticity; no gimmicks, no over-complications, just food made with purpose, care and a deep respect for where it comes from.
With soulful food, a clear vision, and a story full of heart, Ugo Massabo isn’t just a new player in town he’s redefining what it means to bring Italy to Cornwall: “I want to create Italian food you trust. The kind you crave after a long day.” Such is Ugo’s success, that bookings are essential to avoid disappointment and if full tables and repeat customers are anything to go by, this is only the beginning.
