What does travelling mean for you?

We catch up with Wanderlust Travel Agent, Tina Nottle, who tells us: “Last year I visited Cambodia. I absolutely loved it! They have so little compared to us, yet they find joy in everything, embracing each day with unashamed glee. While standing under a gushing waterfall, I felt a massive sense of freedom. I thought: ‘How did a girl from a tiny Cornish village get to be standing under a waterfall in a Cambodian jungle?’ If there’s somewhere you have dreamt of visiting, it’s possible, travel is all-inclusive, and you set your own limitations! Tina’s aim is to fulfil people’s dreams and enable them to have unforgettable experiences just like this.

Lighting that suits your mood with Holdcroft Lighting

You may have heard about sunlight making you happier and reducing symptoms of depression, but did you know that the same can be said for artificial light? With variations of light heightening or lowering emotions, even going as far as affecting the way we eat. And in regards to how light affects eating speed, in general, we eat slower and consume less food in restaurants with softer, dimmer lighting; researchers believe this is because softer lighting may make us less alert and more relaxed. We hear from Holdcroft Lighting owner Haley who tells us: “Here at Holdcroft Lighting, we can arrange a visit to your home or business to help you design the perfect lighting for you and your emotions.”

Selling your home? Presentation is key!

According to the team at My Place in Cornwall, whilst the property you are selling might be your current home, potential buyers are looking at it as though it’s theirs. Your familiarity with your property could be your downfall when it comes to overlooking the basics. This is why the My Place team suggest walking through your property as though you’ve never been there before. Look at everything, from carpets to walls, and be super critical.

Spring is the time to get outside and trim the lawn, weed the garden and sweep the driveway. Inside – remove stains and scuffs from carpets and walls, clean the windows and put away those outdated accessories.

Whilst you needn’t replace everything with new, when your home looks clean, tidy and stain-free, you’re removing factors that a buyer may find off-putting.

Cornwall Hospice Care Consultant Dr Jane Gibbins invited Dr Amelia Stockley, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, to facilitate the event in her role with the action group, Together For Short Lives.

Top furnishing tips

The team at Merchants and Makers are passionate about the fabrics they sell and the bespoke soft furnishings that they create. We ask if they have any tips to help manage the seasonal transition from winter to summer and how to use this time to look after our curtains. “We create a lot of hand-finished, interlined curtains which are fabulous during the winter months – cosy and cocooning as they shut out the winter cold,” says Merchant and Makers Partner, Alan. “However, we’re seeing a new seasonal trend where heavy drapes in reception rooms are swapped for light filtering sheers during the summer months, making the most of the light that we’ve craved all winter. This has a practical element too, as it provides an opportunity to refresh winter curtains with airing, cleaning and any repairs. It also helps reduce sun damage… so it’s a win-win!”

Discover how watersports can benefit your mental health

The benefits of throwing yourself into new activities, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and meeting new people are countless. Water sports, especially, have an incredible influence on mental health. Embracing the lesser-known element of water and overcoming any fears you may have, quite simply, feels amazing.

Kernow Adventure Park owner, Alex Sly, has experienced the positive effects of getting involved in water sports first-hand. He tells us: “After my mum died in 2013, getting in the water, whether on a wake-board, boat, or diving, was what really helped me and it’s something that we strive to promote here at Kernow Adventure Park. When people visit the park we want them to escape from day-to-day stresses and walk away having had the time of their lives.”

The Kernow Adventure Park team has been hand-selected for their positivity; all instructors are trained lifeguards and promote a friendly and fun environment, motivating and inspiring you to make the most of the activities available. There really is nothing better than scrambling around the aqua park, slipping and sliding through the assault course with family and friends; adults will feel like kids again and kids will feel like they can conquer anything after braving the big slide or flying into the air from the launch pad! “The most rewarding thing is to know that we are having a positive influence on other people’s lives,” says Alex. “Watersports in general can help you get through some really tough times, it certainly helped me and my main aim is that Kernow Adventure Park will help other people too, both for building confidence in the water and becoming part of a fun and supportive community.”

For more information email info@kernowadventurepark.com or visit www.kernowadventurepark.com

Capture a piece of the ocean

“Easter weekend was incredible, waves breaking everywhere in Cornwall, and not a cloud in the sky! What better time for me to get out of the galleries, jump into my
ocean office, and go on a surf photography adventure!” says Waves Gallery owner, Mike Lacey. Exploring more of Cornwall’s coastline and getting those blue-sky shots ready for the summer season, Mike tells us: “I finally made it out to some little known coves around the south and north coast that I’ve been wanting to photograph for a while. They certainly didn’t disappoint, the water was Caribbean-blue, crystal-clear, surprisingly warm and teaming with wildlife too, I lost count of the seal greetings I had!” With the summer season kicking off in style, Mike will be getting both galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth stocked with all his latest images,
so be sure to pop along and check them out.

Get summer ready with Slickers

Dogs are vulnerable to various heat related problems during hot spells, from heatstroke to burned paws, not to mention other seasonal environmental issues such as pesticides and the dreaded tick season.

Heatstroke can happen rapidly and be fatal, so it’s vital to ensure that your dog is kept cool and well ventilated during hot spells of weather and, of course, hydrated too. Elderly or sick pets are even more vulnerable to it’s important to watch out for signs of overheating: panting heavily, deep rapid breathing, pale/dry gums, intensive drooling.

Here are Slickers’ top three products for keeping your dog looking and feeling cool this summer: Cool Coats have helped dogs with illnesses that cause breathing difficulties in the heat and has saved lives. They can be worn 24/7, help prevent panting and moderate breathing, therefore relieving stress. Thermal imager testing showed that Cool Coats can help an already over-heated dog reduce its temperature to normal between five and ten minutes.

If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet then it’s most likely burning your dog’s paws too. Slickers stock dog boots with strong-grip soles that are hard wearing and protect little paws from all sorts of dangerous elements all year round. Finally, Doggles; yes we know, they may look like a gimmick but your dog’s eyes are as sensitive as ours and they’re closer to the ground, making them more vulnerable to sand and grit (which incidentally can be very costly should
it cause a visit to the vet), as well as the
sun’s UV rays.

Your dog’s health and wellbeing is a priority for Slickers Doghouse – visit in store or online to see the full range of summer safe products.

Discover the science behind the storms

In a timely reminder of the real world impact of natural disasters, ShelterBox opened a new exhibition called ‘Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons’, just as a real cyclone hit southern Africa. The Cornish disaster relief charity opened the exhibition in early April and a ShelterBox team arrived in Africa the same week, responding to the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. So far, ShelterBox has distributed essential household items and shelter to around 2,000 households who lost their homes to the floodwaters.

Open until November 2019, the new exhibition at ShelterBox Visitor Centre in Truro explains the science behind the storms and the devastating effects of the winds, with stories from ShelterBox’s many responses around the world. There’s a new family friendly Weather Lab, with science experiments to try and a family hurricane challenge to complete. You can also keep up to date with ShelterBox’s responses around the world.
