Introducing the latest Scandinavian trends with The Cotton Mills

As the interiors industry steers away from the monochromatic Scandinavian style, colours are making a comeback. Rather than leaping from one trend to the next, the team at The Cotton Mills in Truro understand how to incorporate the cool Scandi tones we’ve become accustomed to, with the new bolder palette. Sanderson’s new ‘Port Isaac’ range of fabrics and wallpapers seem to embrace this transition; featuring a collection of driftwood and clay hues with pops of coral, lichen and marine. Its coastal colours act as a subtle uplift to the Scandinavian inspired look.

The Cotton Mills’ experienced team are here to give advice on finding the perfect style to match your individuality and that of your property, offering a complete measure and fit service. For a free consultation to explore new trends, why not pop into the store on Pydar street or visit them at this year’s Truro Interiors Market on the Piazza, Truro, on Friday 7th to Sunday 10th September.

Maximise your cottage’s out-of-season potential

If you own a holiday cottage in the Duchy, My Favourite Cottages recommends accepting dogs, to attract those holidaying out of season with their pets.

To do this, consider how many dogs your cottage will welcome – assess the size of your property and how easy it will be to clean on changeover day. To aid in cleaning, providing extra towels and throws and pre-covering furniture will save on cleaning time when your guests leave. Another nice touch is to include doggie welcome packs, with poo bags and doggy treats.

Limit the space where dogs are allowed in the home (for instance on the ground floor only) and provide safe outdoor space for dogs to play. Providing a list of local places where pets are welcome, with suggestions of good walks from the front door, can also help make your guests’ stay memorable.

Award winning eco-friendly heating from Cornish Masonry Stoves

This revolutionary new log burner is making its mark on the home-heating market. The beautifully handcrafted ‘Homeheater’, as seen on Grand Designs, is a modern masonry stove, which is significantly more efficient, economical and sustainable than other heating systems.

Running twice as efficiently as most log burners, it’s also cheaper to install in a house than underfloor or central heating, and it’s non-reliant on fossil fuels!

Bringing together cutting edge technology and the craftsmanship behind ancient Scandinavian stoves, this modern masonry stove can heat a small home for ten hours with just one small fire. Introducing Davidsons IFA: making your money work harder

Since opening in Devon in 2001, Davidsons IFA has striven to provide honest, straightforward, independent financial advice covering investments, pensions, life assurance and mortgages, but without the sales spin.

On what sets the company apart from other financial advisers, Associate Director, Richard Sykes explains: “The structure of the business has always been very different to other financial advisers. Where many other financial advisers work on a self-employed basis, here at Davidsons IFA we are employed with a basic salary and incentivised on regular reviews/meetings with clients, not just on new money being invested, which helps us build on our client relationships.”

In addition, Richard and the team have always been clear and transparent on their fee options from the outset. “How we invest money for our clients has always been forward thinking. We don’t always believe in following the market’s view on a standardised approach in investing for clients. Therefore, we’ve always built investment portfolios by picking a broad range of diversified investment funds for clients with successful results. Leading on from this we are now in the process of setting up our Discretionary Managed Service to offer greater efficiency and choice at some of the lowest fees in the industry.” Impressive!

Having recently opened a branch in Wadebridge, we ask Richard how Davidsons IFA can help clients make the most of their lifestyle in Cornwall. He tells us: “We don’t believe in product pushing and therefore we react to the clients’ needs and financial objectives when they arise. By providing good advice and strong returns for their portfolios, this feeds into the lifestyle Cornwall offers and, ultimately, means greater opportunities for the clients.”

Holiday Home Tips

In a continuation of last month’s holiday home tips, we hear more about tax obligations for furnished holiday lets from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages.

Irrespective of how many UK holiday homes you run for commercial gain, they are treated as one furnished holiday let (FHL) business for tax purposes. The benefits, according to George, “include the ability to average the let occupancy, where one property lets for fewer than 105 days and another lets for more, to ensure you’re still eligible for FHL tax considerations.”

In terms of future proofing your profits, George explains it’s widely accepted that making a profit in year one of holiday letting is hard work because of the upfront investment costs of property set up, preparation and more heavily weighted marketing.

However, “you can offset losses against FHL profits generated in later years – another good reason to stick at it.”

So what are the benefits? George tells us that Capital Gains Tax relief for traders, for instance Business Asset Rollover Relief, can be benefited from if you sell and then buy another holiday home within a given period. What’s more, you’ll get capital allowances for many elements of fitting and furnishing your property, plus, FHL profits count as earnings for pension purposes!

Two successful summer exhibitions for Vincent Basham

Between these latest exhibitions, Vincent sold seven paintings and continues to receive email and telephone enquiries, through which he has sold another. Two of these paintings have gone to Guernsey and one all the way to Germany!

During the second, Vincent met A-level student, Sam, who was studying Vincent’s work for his studies. Sam got to view the work in person, helping him to replicate one of Vincent’s paintings for the completion of his studies. Sam’s family bought one of the paintings for a family member in Padstow, meaning this one will remain in the local area.

If you’re interested to see Vincent’s work be sure to head to his next solo exhibition, from 30th October until 4th November at Padstow Institute. 11 of his paintings are currently available to view at the Sundown by Roc restaurant in Polzeath, too!

Protect your property this winter with Colourfence

While this summer has been one of the hottest in decades, the harsh winter gone is difficult to push to the back of our minds; a winter that proved too harsh for hundreds of fences across the Duchy that gave in to the gales that battered our beautiful county.

Our fences are crucial; they mark our boundaries, protect our privacy and provide security, and yet, with the gust of one gale, many in Cornwall would be, quite literally, gone with the wind, leaving us wishing we’d invested in a more sturdy solution. This is where Colourfence comes in.

Guaranteed for 25 years (in wind gusts up to 130 miles per hour!), Colourfence is made of an innovative steel product with outstanding anti-corrosive properties, making it a fence that’s built to last. It’s no wonder it’s enjoyed a huge surge in popularity across the UK!

Summer success for new Falmouth gallery

Despite the waves on Cornwall’s coastline being few and far between, Mike Lacey’s new gallery in Falmouth has enjoyed a fantastic first summer! Since opening earlier this year, visitors to Falmouth have been flooding into the new gallery to appreciate the stunning wave photography that has made Mike’s other galleries in St Ives and Porthleven so popular.

He tells us: “It’s been an incredible first summer in Falmouth! Thank you to everyone who’s popped by to see us, and for the amazing response and support from everyone there – it really is appreciated! We’re now looking forward to prepping for the autumn/winter season, but saying that, we’re hoping the sunshine will stay with us for at least a little while longer – I still need some blue skies for my photos!”

Tap into the luxury market with Retallack Kitchens

Retallack Kitchens are always looking forward to the next innovation in the kitchen industry. Company founders David and Jo Retallack tells us that, often, very basic things become overlooked. Indeed, in recent years, the biggest innovation has been the birth of the kettle tap, which Jo has in her own kitchen. She tells us: “I don’t know how I’d live without it!”

Having said that, Jo continues: “Many manufacturers have forgotten all about design, which Perrin & Rowe, one of our suppliers, has rectified, with taps that suit both modern and traditional style kitchens. Available finishes include the bang-up-to-trend copper, along with a very classy pewter which doesn’t show finger marks. They also produce matching handles, which helps draw the whole kitchen design together.”

Perrin & Rowe’s name has long been linked with quality, high-end taps with a price tag to match, but now, this much-coveted company produces a competitively priced tap with that same build quality. This, Jo believes, fills a gap in the market. “Yes, you can buy a tap for £50, but the constant dripping will drive you mad!”

Perrin & Rowe also produce fabulous ceramic sinks. Again, these are very much high-end, but their manufacturing process means that the quality is second to none, making the chance of chipping your stunning new sink extremely low.

These products are a prime example of the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’, but don’t just take our word for it; why not pop along to the Retallack Kitchens showroom in Lostwithiel and see for yourself?

Is it time to have that conversation?

As tranquil as visiting Cornwall is at this time of year, it’s hard to feel at peace when we carry our worries with us, as Jane from Highgate found when she realised her husband’s drinking had got out of hand.

“It’s often clearer, sooner, to the people around us when alcohol or other substances have become a difficulty,” says Gerri Creedon of private rehabilitation centre Regain Recovery, Devon. “The best time to talk about it is today. It’s always difficult to broach the topic of recovery, but the sooner you get support the better.”

Jane agrees, “I decided on our yearly trip to Perranporth that it was now or never. The distance from work and daily life helped us open up about his drinking, so we chose a treatment centre in rural Devon. I’ll always associate the south west with our lives truly beginning.”

The Barn at the Rod and Line Tideford

The Rod and Line has been a public house since 1678, renowned for its quirky, timeless interior, the quality of its locally sourced food, the clarity of the beer and of course the character of the landlord. To the side of the pub is a barn that until recently sat almost derelict. However, in January 2018 work began to transform it and since, it has been lovingly and gently restored. Today, The Barn boasts three luxury rooms with en-suite bathrooms, including stand-alone bathtubs, a disabled friendly suite and family room, all with complimentary WiFi, Netflix and organic Cornish toiletries from Tevarno. Make sure to tie your stay in with a meal in the pub and enjoy the atmosphere, music and delicious food.

Discovered in Italy, delivered to your door

What do you get when you mix Cornwall with Italian wine? According to Jackson & Seddon, you get the best of both worlds! This fantastic, Cornwall-based wine club sources the finest artisan, Italian organic wine that you won’t find anywhere else in the UK.

The seeds of Jackson & Seddon were sown when Rob Seddon, the creator and Director of the business, took a chance on a new life and moved to Italy, appearing on BBC2’s Second Chance Summer: Tuscany. While working in the vineyards and completing the harvest there, he formed close relationships with local producers and discovered wines that he describes as the best-kept secret in Italy.

To celebrate the start of the upcoming Italian harvest season, Rob and the team are giving away a bottle of organic extra virgin olive oil when you subscribe to the wine club, so what are you waiting for?

Calling all cheese lovers!

Cheese on Coast was born through a love of all things cheese. Founders Nick and Claire are the first and (currently) only two cheesemongers in Cornwall with an Academy of Cheese recognised qualification, and are also proud members of the Guild of Fine Foods. Their aim is to promote delicious, artisan cheeses produced on farms using recipes that, in some cases, date back centuries. The shop offers an extensive range of 25 to 30 artisan cheeses, Claire tells us: “We have a variety of Cornish cheeses, excellent cheddars and a selection of continental cheeses. You’ll also find a changing menu of seasonal and guest cheeses.” Not to mention the wide range of crackers, chutney’s, relishes and cheese based sausage rolls!

Celebrate Organic September with Riverford Organic

This month is Organic September, which is a good chance to reflect on why the farmers at Riverford have always farmed organically. Riverford farmers, Steve and Lynne Allen tell us: “To us, organic is all about farming with nature in mind; looking after the soil, the environment and the welfare of animals is at the heart of what we do. Farming organically is not about doing things the easy way, but about doing things the right way and working towards a sustainable food system.”

Riverford grows organic vegetables for flavour rather than cosmetic perfection, and they are left to grow naturally, at their own pace, resulting in wonderful flavour and food you can feel good about eating. They finish: “As the Soil Association says, organic food is ‘food as it should be’!”
