Not To Be Sneezed At

Atishoo Gallery and picture framers celebrates 21 years in Charlestown this year.

Artist Liz Hackney founded what was originally called Atishoo Designs in 1997 when she opened her first art studio in St. Agnes on the north coast. Since then, Atishoo has grown into the established gallery, gift shop and bespoke picture framers that we see today in Charlestown; selling art, crafts and homewares by almost 50 artists and designers. Liz and her partner Paul Clark are both established artists and many of the original paintings and prints in the shop are their own creations.

Liz has her easel set up in the shop and can often be seen creating her latest painting while also serving at the counter and unpacking deliveries. Working on paper or canvas she uses collaged tissue paper to create interesting textures on the surface and paints with acrylic inks and watercolour, creating vibrant paintings of Cornish seascapes and harbours. This is where the gallery gets its quirky name from, a play on the words “Art” and “Tissue”, which when said quickly sounds like “Atishoo”

Paul can mainly be found in the picture framing workshop creating frames for some of Cornwall’s leading artists as well as the general public. With 30 plus years as a picture framer he has seen many interesting items, including this year a giant stuffed crab which certainly tested his framing skills!

When he’s not framing Paul paints quirky scenes of the local harbours and villages with fluffy clouds and starry moonlit skies. His most recent painting is of the beautiful Thames Sailing Barge, “The Lady Daphne” which is currently moored in Charlestown Harbour. Over the summer Liz has been involved in the Floating Fayre, a pop-up art and craft fayre on board the barge, where she sells cards and prints of their artwork with a percentage of sales being donated towards the restoration and maintenance of the 101-year-old vessel. Several other artists and craftspeople also regularly exhibit on board with everything from handmade soaps, beach glass jewellery and pottery. Atishoo gallery can be found just up the hill from the harbour, in a courtyard opposite Charlestown Chapel.
