Cornwall Living

Old fashioned and fabulous

With tempting menus and fabulous new accommodation, The Rod and Line has no need to fish for compliments!

The Rod and Line is one of those little gems hidden away in the small village of Tideford in east Cornwall. It’s an inn with beautiful luxury accommodation and the old world charm of a longstanding, time-honoured pub. Inside, you’ll find an exciting menu built from the freshest seasonal, locally-sourced produce, but it’s really the chefs’ crab dishes, including the delicious Sweet Chilli Crab Claws, which have given The Rod and Line its foodie fame.

Last year, the inn’s accommodation enjoyed a fabulous makeover before opening again at the end of the summer. The beautifully converted barn, called An Skiber, contains three luxury suites. The new design reflects the eclectic and luxurious tastes of owners Mike and Jo Lake-Jones, a great example being the wooden floor running through the entire upstairs of the barn. This was painstakingly removed by hand from an old pub in Plymouth, before being lovingly restored and laid with care. It really is a standout feature!

The bathrooms, with floor-to-ceiling Italian porcelain tiles and the contrast of black fittings, enjoy a distinct sense of grandeur, while the accommodation’s lighting has been reclaimed from several types of old boat, lining the corridors and wall spaces as if they were designed to be there. It’s fair to say that no expense has been spared with the soft furnishings and finer touches either, such as the leather bound Cornish room folders, which, containing stories of each room’s name sake, make for an interesting read.

All heated by a bio-mass boiler, which will eventually run the water for the rest of the inn, not only is the new accommodation both stylish and cosy, it’s also eco-friendly. What’s more, Mike and Jo are passionate supporters of local music and up and coming artists, also raising money every year for Cornwall Air Ambulance and Children’s Hospice. In fact, they managed a whopping £22,500 in one night last year!

Offering a delectable menu of fresh Cornish produce and locally-caught seafood, as well as a great range of real Cornish ales, a trip to The Rod and Line this spring comes highly recommended. It’s dog friendly too, so why not pop in with your pooch after an afternoon spent exploring this beautiful pocket of Cornwall?
