Pure Cornish craft
From home experimentation to one of Cornwall’s most respected beer producers.
The story of Verdant Brewing Co. begins with curiosity and a thirst for something different. Back in 2014, Cornwall-based homebrewers Adam Robertson and James Heffron collaborated with Richard White to create the kind of beer they couldn’t find locally – juicy, hoppy, hazy brews that challenged conventional British ales. Over ten years later, their creations flow from taps in over 1,000 UK venues and travel to more than 20 countries worldwide.
At the heart of their success sits Lightbulb, the 4.5% Extra Pale Ale that illuminates Verdant’s distinctive approach. First brewed in 2015 with a recipe that remains unchanged, it strikes a perfect balance, as pale as its namesake but unexpectedly juicy like an IPA. The biscuity malt foundation provides structure for the subtle bitterness, while fruity and dank hops saturate each sip with character. With more than 150 stockists across Cornwall, Lightbulb has become the gateway through which many discover Verdant’s expansive world of flavours.
For those seeking the freshest possible pint, Verdant’s four Cornish venues offer an unrivalled experience. The Penryn Taproom, adjacent to the brewery itself, features 16 keg lines and four cask options pouring directly from source. This community-centred space hosts regular events from record fairs to comedy nights, complemented by authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas recently featured in The Times’ Top 50 places to eat pizza nationwide.
At Schooners, on Trevaunance Cove, St Agnes, visitors enjoy select Verdant brews alongside those same acclaimed pizzas but with the added pleasure of a seaside setting. Meanwhile, The Seafood Bar in Falmouth has earned its reputation as one of Cornwall’s finest eateries, offering tapas-style dishes that Condé Nast Traveller counted among the county’s 15 best restaurants.
The freshly refurbished Seaview Inn, in Falmouth, presents perhaps the most intriguing fusion – traditional pub comforts meet innovative, modern Indian cuisine. Developed in collaboration with Sham Mulji of Penryn’s Situ Café, the menu features authentic dishes prepared using locally sourced ingredients and spices imported directly from independent Indian merchants.
For those exploring Cornwall this summer, experiencing Lightbulb at its freshest – direct from brewery to glass – offers a taste of genuine local innovation that began with three friends and a desire for better beer.
