Quayside creativity

Discover why The Customs House, in the fishing village of Porthleven, is more than just a gallery.

Coming up to their five year anniversary since taking over Customs House Gallery, on the harbourside in Porthleven, Louise and John Winterton are excited at the prospect of many more years to come of displaying the work of both new and upcoming local artists. Indeed, the gallery continues to evolve, and the constant flow of new works from well-established gallery artists, as well as those from new additions to the gallery such as Joe Armstrong are proving ever popular.

The fresh and innovative paintings on display at Customs House help to make this gallery quirky yet sophisticated, with many pieces of Porthleven’s stunning surrounding scenery being incorporated into its exhibitions. But it’s not just paintings on display. John and Louise have an eye for all kinds of work, including sculptures, jewellery and a beautiful range of ceramic work by five different artists.

The gallery is also a member of the Own Art scheme, a popular way to afford original work, usually from local artists. Attend the ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions to gain revealing insights into the artists’ inspiration. Coming up over next few months are some really exciting sessions, which John and Louise tell us include David Gray on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th July; Simon Jewell on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th August, and Jackie Hollingsbee, on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th September. So, if you’d like to discover more about some of west Cornwall’s finest artists, be sure to pop in and see the artists at work.

Finally, John and Louise know that enjoying your favourite piece of art isn’t as simple as buying it and popping it on the wall, which is why they offer a bespoke framing service. Keeping the couple busy with both locals and visitors, it’s just another reason why this beautifully understated gallery is beginning to attract more local artists to the scene. Next time you’re in Porthleven, why not pop in and explore what Customs House has to offer?
