From spectacular performances beneath open skies, to historic tales and animal adventures, Cornwall offers a world of wonder waiting to be explored.

Whether you’re planning a family adventure, a cultural getaway, or a music-filled weekend, Cornwall promises memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s our guide to some magical days out and must-visit events this year across the Duchy.

A journey through time: museums and historic attractions

Prepare to step into the darker corners of Cornwall’s past at Bodmin Jail (www.bodminjail.org). A tour of this landmark ancient site takes visitors through the haunting history of the 18th-century prison, complete with state-of-the-art technology and chilling re-enactments. Wander through original cells, learn the stories of infamous inmates, and feel the weight of centuries-old justice. Whether you’re a history buff or simply in search of a spine-tingling day out, Bodmin Jail offers a truly unforgettable journey into Cornwall’s criminal past.

The Story of Emily (www.thestoryofemily.co) is an immersive visitor experience that chronicles the life of Emily Hobhouse, the Cornish-born humanitarian who campaigned tirelessly for social justice during the Boer War. Through personal artefacts, letters and vivid storytelling, visitors are transported back to a time of conflict and compassion. Emily’s courage and resilience are celebrated in a way that feels deeply relevant today, making this exhibition a poignant must-see for visitors of all ages. Turn to page 25 to discover more.

From its dramatic perch on rugged cliffs, Tintagel Castle (www.english-heritage.org.uk) is a place where history and legend entwine. Managed by English Heritage, this iconic site captivates visitors with its breathtaking cliffside views and ancient ruin. Believed to be the birthplace of King Arthur, Tintagel’s mythic associations are matched only by its real historical significance, with roots stretching back to the Roman and early medieval periods. Today, a spectacular footbridge reconnects the divided headland and island, offering an unforgettable journey across time and tide.

Theatrical treasures: culture under the stars

For theatre lovers, Miracle Theatre (www.miracletheatre.co.uk) delivers inventive, witty performances that bring stories to life in the most unexpected places — from clifftops to gardens. This much-loved Cornish company has been delighting audiences for decades with its blend of humour, originality and daring. Their open-air shows throughout the summer offer a magical way to experience Cornwall’s landscapes, with productions that stay with you long after the final bow. Miracle’s Summer Tour brings Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to life from 9th June until 23rd August.

After a major refurbishment, Hall for Cornwall (www.hallforcornwall.co.uk) has thrown open its doors to reveal a breathtaking new space in the heart of Truro. Showcasing everything from West End musicals and ballets to local productions and stand-up comedy, it’s the beating heart of Cornwall’s cultural scene. Whether you’re after a glittering evening of entertainment or an inspiring matinee, this stunning theatre promises a night (or day) to remember.

No trip to Cornwall would be complete without witnessing a performance at the legendary Minack Theatre (www.minack.com). Carved into the granite cliffs above Porthcurno Beach, this open-air amphitheatre offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop to its plays, concerts and storytelling events. Bring a cushion, a blanket, and a picnic, and prepare for an unforgettable experience where the drama on stage competes with the raw beauty of the sea and sky.

Feel the beat: Cornwall’s festival season

Surf, sand and sound collide at Boardmasters (www.boardmasters.com), Cornwall’s biggest and most iconic festival which this year runs from 8th to 10th August. Held across Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach, Boardmasters combines world-class surfing competitions with a top-tier music line-up, which this year includes Raye, Central Cee and The Prodigy. Whether you’re catching a wave or a headline act, the atmosphere here is pure summer magic.

What could be better than dancing barefoot on the beach as the sun sets over the Atlantic? Now in its tenth year, Tunes in the Dunes (www.tunesinthedunes.co.uk) is held on the golden sands of Perranporth beach from 6th to 8th June, and is a uniquely Cornish festival offering three days of live music, food and beachside revelry. Expect an eclectic mix of artists, local food stalls and plenty of laid-back coastal vibes.

Set against the rolling hills of Dinham House on the Camel Estuary, Rock Oyster Festival (www.rockoysterfestival.co.uk) is a sumptuous celebration of food, music and wellbeing which runs from 24th to 27th July. Oysters are, of course, a star attraction — but with performances from top chefs, a vibrant music programme, yoga classes, and a bustling children’s area, there’s something for everyone. It’s the perfect weekend for foodies and free spirits alike.

Food lovers also won’t want to miss the Falmouth Food Festival (www.falmouthfoodfestival.com) a three-day celebration of Cornwall’s culinary excellence from 23rd to 26th May. With free entry, the town’s historic harbourside becomes a hub of flavour, showcasing everything from artisan cheeses and craft ciders to freshly landed seafood. Cooking demonstrations, tasting sessions and a feast of local produce make this festival a delicious way to experience Cornwall’s thriving food scene.

Animal crackers: get ready for a wild adventure!

A visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org) in Gweek promises heart-warming encounters with rescued marine animals. Home to seals, sea lions, otters, and even penguins, the Sanctuary works tirelessly to rehabilitate and release injured creatures back into the wild. Set against a stunning estuary backdrop, it’s a place where conservation and family fun come together. Children will love seeing the seals splash and play, while adults can enjoy the peaceful riverside walks and learn about the Sanctuary’s vital rescue efforts.

Newquay Zoo (newquayzoo.org.uk) is a much-loved family attraction in the heart of Cornwall. Spread over 13 acres, it’s home to over 130 amazing animals, from cheeky monkeys and playful penguins to rare big cats and colourful birds. As part of the Wild Planet Trust, Newquay Zoo works hard to protect endangered species and inspire young explorers to care for the planet. Families can enjoy close-up animal encounters, fun trails, and hands-on activities throughout the day, making it the perfect place for an adventure full of learning, laughter and unforgettable memories.

The Duchy’s festivals, theatres and attractions offer the perfect escape, where every day brings a new adventure, a new flavour and a new story to tell. Wherever the road (or footpath!) takes you this summer, Cornwall is ready to inspire, enchant and welcome you with open arms.
