Take a Cornish walk through time

This lovely museum is housed in Helston’s historic market buildings. It is spread over five display halls on three floors, and the thousands of objects will keep you fascinated and entertained for hours!

The museum is free to visit and family friendly – including four legged members, and there is even a children’s play area, gift shop and a delightful little pop up café. It contains one of the largest Cornish social history collections and ranges from a five-ton cider press to a 1950s kitchen. Pay a visit and learn about Helston’s famous inventor Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives at sea, and imagine what it was like in a Victorian classroom. Meet Henry the parrot and see if you can spot the museum’s smallest object – made from a lion’s tooth!

Dog walkers are welcome at Porthleven’s Harbour View Café

With scintillating views over Porthleven’s iconic and typically Cornish harbour, Harbour View Café is perfect for anyone looking to refresh themselves on a day spent exploring the south coast. Indeed, the all-day breakfasts are proving very popular with locals and visitors alike!

Managers Penny and Kizzy are already building a fantastic rapport with guests, especially those looking to take a load off while the dog curls up beneath the table. Indeed, the café’s Facebook page is already awash with rave reviews, with many hailing the polite, lovely staff and remarking on the relaxed atmosphere. They’re also licensed to serve alcohol, and they’re now taking bookings!

The whole menu is cooked from scratch, with plenty of delights to choose from, whatever the time of year. The café’s homemade soups, in particular, come highly recommended, as do the homemade cakes and cream teas!

Taking dog friendly to a whole new level!

The greatest compliment the Teacup Tearoom often receives is ‘you aren’t just dog friendly, you are really dog friendly!’, and it’s true! When David and Lis decided to open the tearoom last year, they wanted a place where customers could come with their dogs, a place where furry friends would be welcomed, not just tolerated.

“We provide each of our canine customers with a water bowl and a treat on arrival, plus a comfy bed with a blanket if they desire, which are especially popular on rainy days.” In fact, they even have freshly laundered towels for dogs to dry off!

The dog-friendly theme continues with any gratuities left, which are collected in aid of the St Francis Home for the Animals, and also, from this year, Streetvet Cornwall, a charity that helps care for the pets of Cornwall’s homeless.

Enjoy spring dining at The Lemon Arms

Spring is well and truly here and that means getting outdoors as much as possible to watch the flowers bloom and soak up the gentle spring sun. We recommend a leisurely stroll alongside Mylor creek with your furry friend, spotting the wildlife and watching boats bob on the water, or if the tide’s out, look out for the different bird species such as herons which frequent the area. Then top it off with a pint in the Lemon Arms pub, which has a brilliant beer garden and is renowned for being dog friendly. Welcoming your furry friends with open arms, they can expect treats and cuddles. One customer has said of their experience: “It’s wonderful to see how dogs are welcomed into the pub.” Not to mention The Lemon Arms also provides classic pub food made so well it’s practically gourmet so you can treat yourself after treating your pup, enjoy a prawn cocktail or a mature Cornish cheddar and homemade chutney sandwich in the warm April sun with your canine companion in tow.

Fraser’s proud of Good Catch Gong!

Fraser’s Fish & Chips on the Prom in Penzance has been voted the ‘UK’s Most Sustainable Restaurant 2019’ at the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars!

Being handed the award at a stylish London hotel by Phil Vickery was a big moment of real recognition for the Fraser’s team. The chippy, from opening its doors in 2016, has always held responsible sourcing at the very heart of what it does, and the team believes you can taste the difference. Ingredients are carefully sourced using the Marine Stewardship Council guidance for the chip shop restaurant and takeaway staples of Cod, Haddock and Plaice, and the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide for the local catches from Newlyn Harbour.

Owner Pete Fraser tells us: “Playing our part in securing the future of the industry is so important. From green energy tariffs through to removing single use plastic where we can, the smallest of gestures and changes can make a big difference.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves!

Introducing Creekside Cottages’ dog-friendly holiday homes

Creekside Cottages offers a fine collection of individual waterside and rural self-catering holiday cottages on the south coast of Cornwall and 23 of these cottages are dog friendly! We hear from owner Martin Watson who tells us: “We’re a closely run and supervised company, it’s not a large agency, we’re a family business which has been running since 1956 meaning you get a personal service tailored to you.” Whether you’re looking for a romantic couple’s cottage, a traditional waterside fisherman’s holiday, or luxury self-catering holiday houses sleeping from two up to eight, Creekside Cottages has something to suit you and your four-legged friend. Two cottages that we’ve picked out are The Wheel House and Beach Cottage; both are situated overlooking Restronguet Creek and the Roseland peninsula and are in easy reach of beautiful beaches and the buzzing beachside town of Falmouth.

Take a stroll and explore the estate gardens at Trevince

The estate gardens at Trevince were designed and planted more than 200 years ago in the wealthy mining heart of Cornwall, Gwennap. The gardens include a walled garden of probable 18th century origin and parkland of similar date. In the 19th century, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias were planted, with sub-tropical plants around the lawns and drives vaunting the mild climate. Avenues of Irish yews were subsequently planted and specimen trees complement the native broad leaves. There are also greenhouses, beyond which you’ll find the wilderness walk and woodland planted on the industrial waste of tin and copper workings.

A haven for plant lovers and curious souls, you and your four legged friends are invited to stroll around the Woodland Walk. Bursting with camellias and rhododendrons, spring is well and truly unfurling amidst the beautiful gardens at Trevince. Wander around the historic pond garden and admire the stunning walled garden; with the help of green fingered volunteers the gardens are on a journey of restoration and reinvention, so be sure to visit often and be part of the new story at Trevince. The old cart shed has been converted into a delightful pop up café, serving a selection of hot drinks and delicious homemade goodies for you to enjoy.

Open from 29th March until 29th September, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 4pm. Entry is just
£6 for adults, £5 for concessions and under 16s go free!
