The Ultimate Lakes’ Escape

Make the most of three of Cornwall’s water-based activity centres.

Whether your passion is water sports, angling, walking, cycling or simply enjoying nature, you’ll find the perfect setting for a great day out at Stithians Lake, near Redruth; Siblyback Lake, near Liskeard; or Tamar Lakes, near Bude.

Explore the lakes on foot or by bike, let the youngsters run wild in the play areas, watch the wildlife or relax in a café with magnificent views. Dogs on leads are welcome and all three lakes have superb lakeside campsites if you want to extend your stay.

At Stithians Lake, hire water sports equipment, launch your own kit or join an instructor-led session. The Activity Centre is open for hire, launch and bespoke tuition every day from 10am to 4pm. During the school summer holidays (28 July to 29 August) you’ll find a packed programme of activities including ‘have a go’ windsurfing and sailing sessions. These two-hour sessions are a great way to try an activity for the first time with friends or family, gain basic skills and have fun. Youngsters aged eight to 16 can sign up for a multi-activity day or week to try a variety of different water sports. This could be sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding or raft building, depending on the weather conditions on the day! There’s also the chance to learn to wing surf or eFoil, or take part in a five-day sailing course.

Tamar Lakes, situated on the Devon and Cornwall border, features a well-maintained and accessible 5km round-lake path that is suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and cyclists of all abilities. You can hire water sports equipment or launch your own to explore the lake by kayak, canoe, paddleboard, boat, or swan pedalo! This service is available when the Activity Centre is open (usually Wednesday to Sunday). Recognised as one of the best fishing spots in the UK by The Times earlier this year, Upper Tamar Lake is also famed for its carp and match fishing.

Siblyback Lake is surrounded by the striking backdrop of Bodmin Moor. Hire water sports equipment or launch your own when the Activity Centre is open and experience a different view of the lake. Enjoy a scenic walk through woodland and countryside, finishing with a coffee at Olive & Co to enjoy the stunning surroundings.

South West Lakes Trust is an independent charity dedicated to caring for and enhancing the region’s reservoirs and lakes. These special places are home to wonderful wildlife, important habitats and built historic sites.
