Cornwall LivingIssue #103

There from the outset

In 2015, Bradley Olde was a super-fit and healthy 20 year-old, until a tragedy struck that would change his life forever.

Whilst out running, Bradley collapsed from a cardiac arrest, suffering a severe brain injury as a result. His recovery took time, but Brad knew he wanted to do something to help himself and support others in the same position.

Enlisting the help of his brother Alex and parents Sharon and Charlie, Brad decided to set up a glamping business on their beautiful family smallholding near Bude, providing accessible activity holidays for those recovering from brain injuries, plus respite breaks for carers and relaxing holidays for families and lovers of the outdoors.

Plans were underway at the start of 2020, when Sharon saw a Facebook advert for Outset Cornwall and the family decided to get some business start-up support. Brad says: “Outset Cornwall really helped make this project a reality. I’d tried college and university before and didn’t get too far, but Outset was far more realistic and practical. It was easy for me to specify what I wanted to do for the business and pinpoint things I needed help with.”

Now, Atlantic Horizons is a cosy, tranquil retreat with six glamping bell tents and eight camping spots. All facilities are completely accessible; from wider doorways and ramps in communal areas to accessible compost toilets and eco showers, the team have worked with local disability groups to ensure every part of their business supports people recovering from trauma.

Despite the Covid-19 crisis cutting their inaugural season short, the demand for UK holidays made their first year extremely busy, and the future looks exciting. New plans include an accessible shepherd’s hut offering year-round accommodation and introducing themed retreats to boost the confidence of people suffering from brain injuries or trauma.

“If you have a dream or idea in mind, just go for it,” Brad advises. “The Outset tutors were great; you could ask any question and they knew how to help. Now, we can identify what worked well this season and what we should work on for next year.”

Brad’s brother and business partner Alex says: “It’s been a long, hard journey for Brad but he’s always remained determined. He works incredibly hard and continues to inspire us. We’ve all learned that you really can do what you put your mind to with some positivity, determination and passion. I’m always grateful he’s with me to share this adventure!”
