Dogs Love Cornwall LivingAutumn/Winter 2019

Walks and waggy tails

Lace up your boots and strike out across the Isles of Scilly this autumn with October’s Walk Scilly festival.

Autumn is only just around the corner but that’s not to say the days of getting out and exploring Cornwall are over. In fact, we’d go as far as to say autumn is one of our favourite seasons for getting out there, particularly with our furry friends in tow, and where could be better to see the summer greens turn to auburn than on the gorgeous Isles of Scilly?

This coming October, from Thursday 10th to Monday 14th, is this year’s second Walk Scilly – a five-day festival offering a choice of easy, moderate and hard walks, depending on how up for a challenge you and your pooch are feeling. Taking in the beaches, hills, paths and roads of Scilly, half-day walks are estimated at around three miles, while full-day outings cover around five or six. If you have a four-legged friend who could use a good tiring out, this island festival’s guided walks could well be for you – especially since 10 of the 15 walks are dog friendly!

The recommended top three dog walks include a Walking Story on St Martin’s with novelist Wyl Menmuir, the St Mary’s Energetic Coastal Hike, and the St Agnes Top to Toe. There are even a number of boat trips, on which your furry friend is more than welcome! For those walks that are human only, why not instead branch off with just the two of you and explore the isles at your own pace? Nothing could be more inspiring than unearthing the seemingly untouched reaches of such a wild part of the world.

Led by the very best expert guides and local islanders, Walk Scilly truly brings the treasures and hidden gems of this archipelago to life. It provides visitors with the chance to see the land and seascapes in all their autumn glory, as well as the abundant wildlife the islands are home to, including migrating birds, bats, seabirds, even seals. Trust us, your dog is going to love it!
