Winter-proof your home

With all the extra time we’re spending at home and winter just around the corner, many of us are looking to make our sanctuaries as cosy as possible.

As many will well know, this can be an uphill battle, especially with old, draughty windows and doors to contend with. Replacement doors and windows will not only improve the aesthetic of your home but also the energy efficiency, meaning a warmer home with less money wasted on heating through the winter and, significantly, a lower environmental impact. Indeed, many of us are becoming more aware of our carbon footprints and one of the first places we can look to make improvements is in our homes. You need only look at thermally imaged comparisons of single and double glazing to see that single glazing is significantly less efficient, responsible for far more extensive heat loss than their double glazed counterparts.

Double glazing doesn’t have to be characterless. Many customers with period properties wish to retain their traditional style, for instance, with Victorian sash windows. This can be achieved in several ways. Timber hardwood double glazed windows can be made to be a faithful reproduction of old Victorian sash windows but with the benefits of modern glass technology. Alternatively, uPVC sash windows retain much of the character of traditional timber windows without the maintenance. With the added benefit of being able to paint both timber and uPVC in any colour, your windows can really make a statement.

If it’s the clean pared back lines of a more modern aesthetic you’re after, then aluminium with its thin sight lines might be the best choice, although a dark painted or foiled uPVC can achieve a similar look on a more cost-friendly basis.

Whether you choose timber, uPVC or aluminium, Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories Ltd can be on hand to help with your project. This local, family run firm has been manufacturing windows, doors and conservatories in Cornwall for over 35 years. With a passion for good design, the team has a reputation for innovative, quality installations with a genuine after care service.
