Winters Escapes

From festive feasts to stormy seas, Cornwall makes a compelling case for a seasonal stay.

As the days shorten and our ability to maintain that perky smile as the rain comes down in torrents begins to wane, Cornwall has hotels that make a persuasive case for packing a bag and letting somebody else take charge for a few days.

In Truro, The Alverton (www.thealverton.co.uk) occupies a former nineteenth-century convent, its historic buildings set among mature trees within walking distance of the city centre. The Gothic architecture of Truro Cathedral provides an impressive companion to an afternoon spent browsing the Christmas markets, while Hall for Cornwall offers the chance to round off the day with a seasonal show. Back at the hotel, festive lunches start from £30 per person, with party nights offering multi-course dinners and entertainment. It is a useful choice for anyone who wants Christmas shopping and a comfortable bed without having to negotiate the journey home afterwards.

Falmouth provides a different sort of winter break, with two hotels offering distinct ways to enjoy the town. The Greenbank (www.greenbank-hotel.co.uk) stands directly on the harbour, where working boats and changing tides provide a running commentary from the bedroom window. Its Water’s Edge restaurant is known for its views, while The Working Boat pub gives guests an inviting place to settle in after a bracing walk around the waterfront. The hotel’s current November Nights offer starts at £139 for two, including a two-course dinner, breakfast and a choice of drinks or cream tea. For festive outings, Falmouth’s seasonal market and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall are within easy reach.

The Falmouth (www.falmouthhotel.co.uk), meanwhile, brings Victorian grandeur to the seafront, with landscaped gardens and views across the south coast beaches. On colder days, the hotel’s indoor heated pool, hot tub and spa facilities offer an alternative to the elements. Festive dining and party nights make it a contender for anyone who prefers a full programme of Christmas celebrations, with menus built around classic seasonal cooking.

At the other side of the county, The Atlantic (www.atlantichotelnewquay.co.uk) rises above Newquay’s coastline, its historc character and exposed headland  position making it a natural choice for anyone who enjoys watching the sea in a temper. Fistral Beach attracts surfers throughout the year, and the path across Towan Headland offers broad views of the Atlantic. Bedruthan Steps is another option for an exhilarating coastal excursion.

For a stay with a Georgian character, Penventon Park Hotel (www.penventon.co.uk) in Redruth offers an appealing base from which to explore both coasts. Its Cornish Winter Warmer package is available from October to March, excluding December, and starts at £169 per night for two sharing a Classic Double Room. The package includes a night’s accommodation, a hot chocolate served with cream and marshmallows, two courses from the set menu or a £26 allowance towards the regular dinner menu, access to the leisure club and breakfast. The heated indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna make it easy to spend a day indoors if the weather turns.

St Moritz Hotel (www.stmoritzhotel.co.uk) brings Art Deco-inspired design to the coast between Rock and Polzeath, with the Cowshed Spa adding a restorative element to a stay. The hotel’s Christmas packages combine accommodation and festive dining, with carol singing and a Christmas Day lunch among the seasonal attractions. Daymer Bay is a rewarding destination for a Boxing Day walk, with views across the Camel Estuary and towards St Enodoc Church.

In West Looe, the Portbyhan Hotel (www.portbyhan.com) places guests directly on the quayside, overlooking the River Looe. It is an excellent setting for watching the town go about its business, with fishing boats and the river providing a view that changes throughout the day. The hotel’s seasonal offers include bed and breakfast from £99 per night in late autumn and early winter, with dinner, bed and breakfast available from £149. Christmas brings its own programme of festive dining and party nights, while the town’s narrow streets and waterfront remain enjoyable to explore outside the summer rush.

For adults seeking a coastal break with wellness at its centre, Fistral Beach Hotel & Spa (www.fistralbeachhotel.co.uk) looks straight out over Newquay’s famous surf beach. The hotel’s current autumn offers include packages with dining and spa access, with prices and inclusions varying by date. After a walk along the beach, guests can return to the warmth of the spa or enjoy dinner with a view of the waves. It is a particularly attractive prospect when the forecast suggests a day best spent close to the hotel.

Further south, Budock Vean Hotel & Spa (www.budockvean.co.uk) occupies 65 acres beside the Helford River, with woodland paths and gardens providing plenty of scope for exploration. Trebah and Glendurgan gardens are close by, while the hotel’s indoor pool, sauna and golf course give guests options whatever the weather. Its current offers include three nights for the price of two, from £261.30 per room for two people sharing, subject to availability. The hotel also advertises Christmas, Twixmas and New Year breaks, with festive dining and leisure facilities included in selected packages.

At Housel Bay (www.houselbay.com), on the Lizard Peninsula, the landscape takes centre stage. It’s All Wrapped Up offer combines accommodation, Cornish breakfast and an evening meal at The Terrace, while the Taste of the Season package adds a six-course tasting menu at Fallowfields to a three-night stay. The hotel’s current offers include a 20 per cent discount for bookings made at least three months in advance, subject to the stated exclusions. For Christmas 2026, Housel Christmas offers a three-night dinner, bed and breakfast stay, while the Housel Hootenanny provides a festive route into the New Year. Nearby Lizard Point and Kynance Cove are worth visiting when conditions allow.

Polurrian on the Lizard (www.polurrianhotel.com) completes the picture with its clifftop position. The hotel’s seasonal special offeres two- or three-night midweek stays from £385 per room, including breakfast, a Cornish cream tea and a £32.50 dining credit per adult. Its self-catering villas also provide more space for longer winter visits, with discounts available on qualifying stays. The hotel is undertaking a major expansion, including a new spa and infinity pool scheduled to open in spring 2027.

Cornwall’s winter hotels offer plenty of ways to spend the colder months, whether the plan involves festive dining, a spa treatment or a long walk followed by a good meal. Booking direct and checking the small print will help ensure that the chosen package matches your plans. Then it’s simply a matter of packing a warm coat and letting winter get on with itself.
