Interior design tips: Camellia & Co’s Elaine Skinner talks us through accessorising our holiday homes

With a reputation for refurbishing holiday homes across Cornwall, we catch up with Elaine Skinner of interior design practice Camellia & Co., and get her top tips on how to give your holiday home the edge over others in today’s competitive market.

We ask Elaine what signature finishing touches she adds to her interior holiday home projects.

Firstly, create groupings. Small, singular objects can disappear or look out of place in a room when displayed on their own, whereas grouping a few items together will add weight and impact to your accessories. Stagger the heights of your accessories on a bookshelf or create symmetry with your wall hangings. “Remember to follow the rule of three; odd numbers of recurring fixtures tend to look more natural and effortless when incorporated into your design scheme!”

Finally, consider texture. “Texture creates instant visual interest in your design scheme; use different fabrics and finishes throughout your soft furnishings to add dimension and give your room an instant lift.

“Those special personal touches will reflect your individuality and personality, and your guests will love them!”

Charity show celebrates 20 years in the community

Cornwall Hospice Care’s Holmbush Community Shop first opened its doors in 1997 and 20 years later the shop has just doubled in size, expanding into the store next door. When it first opened, volunteer Joy helped serve the customers as they found bargains and hidden treasures, and if you go in now (on the right day) you will still find Joy there with her welcoming smile.

Joy explains why she’s volunteered for the Cornish charity for so many years, “I’ve had two relations cared for at the hospice, and it’s such a wonderful place.”

“I’ve loved being able to give something back.” Talking about the expansion Joy says, “the shop has changed throughout the years but this is so exciting, I look forward to seeing our regular customers and lots of new ones too!”

2017 marks another successful St Mawes Sailing Club Regatta Day

On an August summer’s day what more could we expect from the weather? Grey skies, Cornish mizzle and a fair southwesterly breeze – perfect conditions for racing in Falmouth bay! The day brightened and competition looked fierce from the safety and warmth of the sailing club. As the sailors returned, wet, cold and hungry the Philip Martin flag was raised behind Irish tones of Black Velvet. Teas were served, pints were poured and the evening got underway just after the prize giving. On the quayside, of which the Philip Martin team were the sponsors, the Tors took to the stage and the weather just about held. The St Mawes Ferry continued its taxi service from the Prince of Wales Pier to and from St Mawes. The tickets were courtesy of the St Mawes Ferry Company with donations to the RNLI. A good time was had by all.

Do you want to develop your listed home?

If you’re living in a wonderful, listed Cornish building and you’re thinking of altering or extending your property, you’ll first need to get a heritage appraisal to help guide you on what your options are. This will form an important part of any listed building application to the Council.

The appraisal is essentially an inspection of the building to understand its age and changes over time, as well as a detailed look at the archives and old maps, which are all set out in a bound report. It could be likened to a ‘who do you think you are’ of listed buildings!

Andrew Hayes, a Conservation Accredited Chartered Surveyor of Court Design and Conservation specialises in such work, and urges you to get in touch if you’re itching to develop your listed property.
