A seat at the table
In a celebration of Cornish produce plucked from both land and sea, The Greenbank and The Alverton are two unmissable stops for those with a culinary curiosity.
Cornwall’s sun-drenched coastlines and sapphire seas are enough to draw visitors year after year – but beyond the beaches and cobbled streets lies a thriving food scene that leaves a lasting impression on those who know where to look. At the heart of it all is the Cornwall Hotel Collection, home to two of the region’s most celebrated culinary destinations: The Greenbank in Falmouth and The Alverton in Truro.
Perched on the edge of the River Fal, The Greenbank offers more than just a postcard-worthy view of Falmouth’s harbour. Its Water’s Edge restaurant, led by Head Chef Bobby Southworth and Executive Chef Nick Hodges, delivers a menu inspired by the rhythm of the Cornish seasons. Bobby’s approach celebrates simplicity and balance, each dish crafted with ingredients sourced from local land and sea, showcasing a passion for regional produce.
Afternoon teas, designed by Pastry Chef Aaron Rawlings, offer a moment of indulgence, while the Dessert’s On Us lunch offer (Monday to Saturday, enjoy three courses from their lunch menu for £24, including a complimentary dessert) adds extra sweetness to the experience. Bobby’s popularity has grown thanks to his sell-out ‘Bobby’s Taste of Cornwall’ evenings. With the next event taking place on Thursday 30th October, guests are invited to take a seat while he shares his love of local ingredients and storytelling in an immersive dining experience.
Just a short drive inland, nestled in a leafy corner of Truro, The Alverton offers its own culinary escape. Surrounded by historic architecture and tranquil gardens, this Grade II-listed retreat serves up refined yet relaxed dining in its elegant garden-view restaurant. Under the direction of Head Chef Ollie Wyatt, alongside Nick Hodges, menus are designed to let Cornwall’s natural flavours shine. “We try to keep things simple,” Ollie explains, “so what’s on the plate really speaks for itself.”
Creative meat dishes, succulent local seafood and delicious veggie options highlight a deeply rooted respect for seasonal produce. The Alverton’s afternoon teas are equally popular, served with a touch of quiet sophistication. In the summer months, Ollie takes to the terrace for Friday night barbecues, filling the gardens with the scent of sizzling meats, fresh fish, and charred vegetables. And for seafood lovers, Lobster on the Lawn returns on Saturday 26th July – a decadent outdoor celebration with fresh seafood, bubbles, and a relaxed al-fresco vibe.
Ollie’s ‘Hedgerow and Field’ Taste of Truro evening on Thursday 19th June will shine a light on Cornwall’s unsung plant heroes. Expect a delicious five-course tasting menu with a focus on celebrating the very best Cornish produce, all prepared with care and creativity. For those not lucky enough to secure a seat for this event, keep an eye out on The Alverton’s website for future Taste of Truro events. From Falmouth’s harbourside elegance to Truro’s hidden garden haven, the Cornwall Hotel Collection offers unforgettable dining experiences rooted in place, passion, and produce.
